Thimphu, Bhutan

State guide with cities, regions, and key information.

Introduction
Thimphu District is the political and administrative heart of Bhutan, home to the capital city and the country's largest population center. The district stretches along the Wang Chhu river valley at elevations between 2,000 and 4,500 metres, encompassing the capital, surrounding farming villages, forested hillsides, and alpine meadows that give way to snow-dusted ridgelines. Despite housing the seat of government and Bhutan's nascent urban culture, the district remains overwhelmingly green — over 70% forest cover.

Travel Types

Capital City Culture

Thimphu city offers the Weekend Market, National Textile Museum, Folk Heritage Museum, Buddha Dordenma, and Tashichho Dzong. The compact walkable center mixes traditional architecture with a growing cafe and restaurant scene. The Motithang Takin Preserve houses Bhutan's bizarre national animal.

Monastery Hikes

Day hikes to Cheri Monastery (2 hours round trip through pine forest), Wangditse Monastery (overlooking the valley), and Phajoding Monastery (higher and more demanding) offer forest trails, birdsong, and centuries-old monastic architecture in the hills surrounding the capital.

Dochula Pass & Scenic Drives

The Dochula Pass (3,100 m) between Thimphu and Punakha features 108 memorial chortens and — on clear mornings — a panorama of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The road through the Wang Chhu valley to Paro passes through terraced farmland and traditional villages.

Festivals & Traditions

The Thimphu Tsechu (autumn) is one of Bhutan's grandest festivals — three days of masked Cham dances in the Tashichho Dzong courtyard. Weekend archery tournaments in open fields combine sport with singing, dancing, and community celebration.
