NordLynx Protocol

NordVPN's proprietary NordLynx protocol is built on WireGuard, a modern VPN protocol known for speed and efficiency. WireGuard uses approximately 4,000 lines of code, compared to OpenVPN's 70,000+ lines, making it easier to audit and maintain.

NordLynx uses ChaCha20 for encryption, Poly1305 for authentication, and Curve25519 for key exchange. To address WireGuard's privacy considerations, NordVPN implements a double Network Address Translation (NAT) system. This creates two local network interfaces for each user, ensuring no identifiable data is stored on servers while maintaining the performance benefits of WireGuard.

Post-Quantum Encryption

NordVPN introduced post-quantum encryption upgrades to the NordLynx protocol, first on Linux in September 2024, then rolling out to Windows, Android, iOS, and macOS in early 2025. This prepares the service for future cryptographic challenges.

Security Standards

NordVPN has been independently audited by Deloitte (2025) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (2018, 2020, 2022), confirming its no-logs policy and secure infrastructure operations. The company is headquartered in Panama, a jurisdiction that supports strong privacy protections.

Obfuscated Servers

Obfuscated servers use specialized technology to disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic by removing VPN-related information from data packets while maintaining encryption. This allows connections in environments where VPN usage may be restricted or monitored.

Obfuscation works with OpenVPN (TCP/UDP) protocols. The VPN client scrambles packet metadata so deep packet inspection systems cannot easily identify VPN usage, while raw data remains encrypted.

Threat Protection Pro is NordVPN's security suite that operates at the device level, even when the VPN is not actively connected.
