Chilean Embassy in Beijing

Embassy of Chile in Beijing, China

Overview

The Embassy of Chile in Beijing anchors one of Latin America's most consequential bilateral relationships with China. Chile was the first South American country to recognise the People's Republic (1970) and the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement with China (2005, upgraded 2019 to cover services, investment, e-commerce and government procurement). China is Chile's largest trading partner by a wide margin — copper dominates, but Chile is also the world's largest exporter of cherries to China, and Chilean wine, salmon, blueberries, avocados and forestry products have become household names among Chinese consumers. Chile maintains one of the largest Latin American diplomatic networks in China with consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Chengdu, plus a ProChile trade promotion office.

Visa Services

The consular section processes visa applications for Chinese citizens travelling to Chile. Chilean visa categories include tourist, temporary resident, student and work visas. Chile offers visa-free entry to Chinese nationals holding valid US visas. Processing is handled at the consular section in the Sanlitun Diplomatic Residence Compound.

Consular Services

The consular section provides passport renewal, civil registration, document legalisation, notarial services, powers of attorney and emergency assistance for Chilean nationals across northern and central China. The section also handles birth and marriage registrations, judicial cooperation requests and electoral services for Chileans abroad.

Trade & Export Support

Chile is the world's largest copper producer and China is the world's largest copper consumer — the two economies fit together structurally. Beyond copper, Chilean exports to China include lithium (Chile holds the world's largest proven reserves), fresh fruit (cherries, blueberries, grapes, avocados), wine, salmon, forestry products and fishmeal. The China-Chile FTA provides preferential tariff access across virtually all product categories. ProChile, the trade promotion agency, operates a dedicated office in Beijing.

Cultural & Educational Programs

Cultural exchange includes Chilean wine promotion events at major trade fairs, film screenings, art exhibitions and academic cooperation. Chilean universities maintain partnerships with Chinese institutions, and Confucius Institutes in Chile support Chinese language study. Chilean gastronomy — particularly wine and seafood — has become a cultural ambassador in its own right.

Service Area

The embassy covers Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Tibet and Yunnan. Consulates general in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Chengdu extend coverage to eastern, southern and western China.
