Qatar is a small peninsular nation on the Arabian Gulf that punches far above its weight. The 2022 FIFA World Cup put Doha on the global map, and the legacy infrastructure — a driverless metro, world-class stadiums, and over 50,000 new hotel rooms — has made it one of the Gulf's most accessible destinations. The Museum of Islamic Art (I.M. Pei) houses one of the world's finest collections of Islamic art across 1,400 years. The National Museum (Jean Nouvel, shaped like a desert rose) tells Qatar's story from Bedouin origins to gas-fuelled modernity. Souq Waqif is a restored traditional market of spice stalls, falcon merchants, shisha cafés and Arabic grills. The Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid, UNESCO-recognised) is where desert dunes meet the Gulf in a landscape found nowhere else on the Arabian Peninsula. And Qatar Airways — consistently rated among the world's best airlines — connects Doha to 160+ destinations, making the city a natural stopover. Visa-free entry for citizens of 90+ countries, with US/UK/Australian nationals receiving 90 days. Passport valid 6 months. Qatar is conservative Islamic society — alcohol only in licensed hotel venues, modest dress required, cultural norms strictly enforced.

Qatar Visa & Entry System

Qatar offers visa-free entry for citizens of over 90 countries. US, UK, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens receive 90 days (extendable once for 90 more, total 180 days). EU citizens receive 90 days. Many Asian and Latin American countries receive 30 days. No advance application needed — entry stamp at Hamad International Airport. For nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry, Qatar offers an e-visa system (USD 28-100, processing 3-5 business days) through the Ministry of Interior portal. GCC residents (holding residence visas for UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman) can obtain a visa on arrival (QAR 100). Transit passengers on Qatar Airways with 5+ hour layovers can request a free transit visa or a 96-hour transit visa (USD 11) for a short Doha visit. Passport must be valid 6 months. Return/onward ticket required. Qatar Airways also offers stopover packages allowing passengers to break long-haul journeys with 1-3 nights in Doha including hotel.

Travel Guide

Qatar is compact (smaller than Connecticut) but delivers concentrated experiences. The Museum of Islamic Art — I.M. Pei's geometric masterpiece on the Corniche waterfront — houses Islamic art spanning 1,400 years across ceramics, textiles, manuscripts and metalwork. Admission is free. The surrounding MIA Park offers evening strolls with views of the West Bay skyline. The National Museum of Qatar (Jean Nouvel, 2019) resembles a desert rose crystal formation and tells Qatar's history from pearl diving to natural gas. Souq Waqif is the heart of traditional Doha: spice stalls selling saffron and frankincense, the Falcon Souq (trained hunting falcons from USD 10,000 to USD 100,000+), shisha cafés, Arabic grills (machboos, harees, fresh juice USD 2-5, meals USD 8-20), and art galleries in renovated mud-rendered buildings. The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island of luxury apartments, yacht marinas and designer boutiques modelled on Mediterranean harbours. Desert safaris to the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) — where sand dunes meet the sea — include dune bashing in 4x4s, camel riding, sandboarding and Bedouin-camp dinners (USD 50-150 half-day). Bir Zekreet features Richard Serra's monumental "East-West/West-East" sculpture — four steel pillars in the desert. Katara Cultural Village hosts an amphitheatre, opera house, galleries and a beach. And the Doha Metro (opened 2019, driverless, USD 0.50-1.50 per ride) connects the airport, city centre and stadiums with remarkable efficiency.

Practical Money Tips

Cards and Contactless Work Excellently

Qatar modernised its payment infrastructure dramatically for the 2022 World Cup. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, supermarkets, petrol stations and most shops. Contactless payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) work widely at NFC terminals — adoption is high across Doha. The Doha Metro accepts contactless bank cards directly at fare gates. Cash is mainly needed at Souq Waqif's smaller vendors, local cafeterias and a few older establishments. For a Gulf state, Qatar is remarkably cashless in its modern areas.

The Riyal Is Pegged to the Dollar — No Surprises

The Qatari Riyal (QAR) is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of 3.64 QAR per 1 USD. This means the exchange rate is stable and predictable for dollar-based travellers. For visitors with Euros or GBP, the QAR rate fluctuates with the EUR/USD or GBP/USD rate — check before travel. Exchange at banks (QNB, Commercial Bank, Doha Bank) or licensed exchange offices. Airport rates are acceptable; city-centre rates marginally better. There is no need to buy Qatari Riyals before departure — ATMs and exchange offices are available immediately at Hamad International Airport.

ATMs Everywhere — Modern and Reliable

ATMs from QNB (Qatar National Bank, the largest in the Middle East by assets), Commercial Bank, Doha Bank and Masraf Al Rayan are found in every shopping mall, hotel, supermarket, metro station and petrol station. All accept Visa and Mastercard. Withdrawal limits are generous (typically QAR 5,000-10,000 per transaction). Always decline dynamic currency conversion and withdraw in QAR to get your bank's exchange rate.

No Alcohol in Shops — Budget Differently from Europe

Alcohol is only available at licensed bars and restaurants in 4-5 star hotels — and it is expensive (beer QAR 45-55 / USD 12-15, cocktails QAR 55-75 / USD 15-20, wine by the glass QAR 50-80). There are no liquor shops, supermarket alcohol aisles or off-licences. For travellers from countries where bar spending is a significant part of the budget, this either saves money (if you abstain) or concentrates it (if you drink at hotel bars). Qatar's thriving café culture — Arabic coffee (qahwa) with dates, specialty third-wave coffee shops, fresh juice stands — fills the social space that bars occupy elsewhere.

Note: Always check current exchange rates before traveling. Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and authorized money changers.
