Overview

Ethiopia's high-altitude capital and the seat of the African Union — a city of Italian-era arcades, a renovated imperial palace, one of humanity's oldest fossil finds, and a coffee-shop culture that rewards lingering.

Travel

Addis Ababa sits at 2,355 metres on the central Ethiopian highlands, making it one of the world's highest capitals and giving it a cool, spring-like climate year-round despite its equatorial latitude. Founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, the city serves today as the seat of the African Union, making it the diplomatic capital of the continent. Its centrepiece draws are the National Museum, home to the fossil remains of Lucy, one of the most complete early human ancestors ever found; the sprawling Mercato, reportedly Africa's largest open-air market; and the Entoto Hills above the city, where Menelik II first established his capital before moving it downhill to the valley's hot springs. A growing coffee-shop and culinary scene, built on the buna ceremony that underlies Ethiopian daily life, makes the city an increasingly rewarding stop in its own right — and Ethiopian Airlines' hub status at Bole International Airport means most visitors to the country pass through regardless of their onward route.

The National Museum of Ethiopia's most famous resident is Lucy — 3.2-million-year-old fossil remains of Australopithecus afarensis, discovered in 1974 by a team led by American palaeoanthropologist Donald Johanson at Hadar in the Afar region, roughly 40% of a single skeleton recovered from a single dig site, an exceptional completeness for a fossil this old. The exhibited remains on display are high-quality casts; the originals are kept in secure storage, brought out only for research. The museum's broader collection traces Ethiopian history from prehistory through the imperial era, including royal regalia and artefacts from Aksum and Gondar, giving the Lucy exhibit context within a much longer national story rather than standing alone.

Frequently asked questions

One to two full days covers the highlights comfortably — the National Museum's Lucy exhibit, Unity Park, and either the Mercato or a Piazza coffee-house circuit. Most visitors combine it with onward travel to Lalibela, the Simien Mountains or the Danakil Depression rather than treating it as a standalone destination.
