New Delhi was commissioned in 1911, when the British moved the capital of their Indian empire from Calcutta, and built over the following two decades to designs by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker; it was formally inaugurated in 1931. The plan deliberately set a low, spacious, axial city beside the dense Mughal one, using Indian architectural motifs at European scale — a synthesis that was contested at the time and remains legible in every roundabout and dome. Independent India inherited the district in 1947 and made it the working capital of the republic, adding the institutions of a modern state to the imperial frame; the ceremonial axis was renamed, the presidential estate took over the viceroy's house, and the diplomatic enclave at Chanakyapuri was laid out in the 1950s and 1960s as embassies arrived.

วัฒนธรรม

The capital district eats differently from the old city: Khan Market and the Connaught Place colonnades hold the restaurant scene, from long-running Indian kitchens to the contemporary places that have made Delhi a serious dining city, and the hotel restaurants along the axis are institutions in their own right. For the street-food canon and the Mughlai institutions of the old city, that is the metropolis guide's ground rather than this one's. เทศกาล: Republic Day (26 January): the national parade along the ceremonial axis, with weeks of rehearsals closing the same roads beforehand, Beating Retreat (late January): the ceremonial military music event that closes the Republic Day season in the capital precinct, The presidential estate's gardens open to the public for a season in late winter, drawing very large crowds, The winter arts season fills the district's auditoria and galleries from roughly December to March. พิพิธภัณฑ์: National Museum (Janpath) — the country's principal collection, from Indus Valley material to Mughal manuscripts, National Gallery of Modern Art — Indian art from the Company School to contemporary practice, National Rail Museum (Chanakyapuri) — heritage locomotives and royal saloons in open-air grounds, Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum (Safdarjung Road) — the former prime minister's residence, preserved as a museum.

ข้อมูลเชิงปฏิบัติ

ความปลอดภัย: The district is among the safest and quietest parts of Delhi, with the usual big-city sense applied around the main stations and markets. Two local factors matter more than crime: air quality in the late-autumn-to-winter window, which affects the whole city and is covered in the metropolis guide, and ceremonial road closures, which can reroute traffic across the precinct at short notice. Security screening is routine at metro stations, museums and anywhere near the government precinct. The unified emergency number is 112. ภาษา: English is effectively universal in the district's service, government and diplomatic contexts, alongside Hindi as the language of daily life. Signage and metro announcements are bilingual. สกุลเงิน: Indian rupee (INR, ₹). Cards and QR-code payment work across the district's restaurants, shops and hotels, with ATMs at metro stations and markets. Keep some cash for auto-rickshaws and smaller vendors.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

What is the difference between New Delhi and Delhi?

New Delhi is a district inside the metropolis: the capital laid out by the British from 1911 and inaugurated in 1931, holding the ceremonial axis, the government institutions and the diplomatic enclave. Delhi is the whole city — the Mughal old city, the Sultanate ruins in the south, the suburbs, and a metro area of some 32 million, covered in the Delhi metropolis guide. Postal addresses, railway stations and the mission layer all use New Delhi specifically, which is why the distinction is worth knowing even though visitors move between the two without noticing.

Is the capital district worth a day if I am not here on business?

Half a day at least, and it pairs well with an early start. The ceremonial axis at dawn, Lodhi Gardens for an hour among its tombs, and the National Museum on Janpath make a genuinely good morning, with the langar at Bangla Sahib as the thing you will actually remember. What the district does not have is the density and noise people come to Delhi for — that is the old city's, in the metropolis guide.

Where should I stay if I have an embassy or visa-centre appointment?

Either in the capital district itself, which puts you close to Chanakyapuri and the commercial buildings the application centres use, or at Aerocity beside the airport if your trip is short and appointment-driven. Both are metro-connected. Keep the appointment day itself simple: book transport rather than improvising, allow far more time than the distance suggests, and expect to leave phones and bags outside.

Can I visit Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Parliament buildings?

Access to the working buildings is limited and arrangements change, including during the precinct's redevelopment, so check the current position before planning around it rather than turning up. The presidential estate's gardens open to the public for a season in late winter and are worth timing a visit for, though the crowds are substantial. The axis itself, India Gate and the exteriors are open at all times and are best seen early in the morning.

What should I know about Republic Day if I am visiting in January?

That it takes over the district. The parade on 26 January runs the length of the ceremonial axis, and rehearsals close the same roads repeatedly in the weeks before, with traffic rerouted across the precinct and security tightened throughout. It is one of the country's great civic spectacles if you want to see it — seating is ticketed in advance through official channels — and a considerable disruption if you had other plans for those roads.
