Los Angeles was founded in 1781 as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, a Spanish pueblo, and passed through Mexican and then American rule during the nineteenth century. Railways, oil and citrus drove the first booms; the film industry arrived in the 1910s looking for cheap land and reliable light and stayed; aerospace and the postwar suburban expansion did the rest.
