Overview
Irish citizens don't need a UK visa — the Common Travel Area, in place since 1922, gives Irish nationals an automatic right to live, work, study and travel in the United Kingdom without immigration controls, and the same applies to UK citizens visiting Ireland. That makes the British Embassy in Dublin unusual in the network: there is essentially no UK visa pipeline for Irish nationals, so the post functions almost entirely as a consular office for the very large British community resident in Ireland and for the constant cross-channel travel between the islands. Passport renewal, notarial services, civil registration, emergency assistance — that's the day-to-day. The embassy is at 29 Merrion Road in the Ballsbridge district of Dublin 4. (Non-Irish nationals living in Ireland who need a UK visa use the standard VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre route, with decisions issued by UK Visas and Immigration.) In-person services by appointment; contact via the FCDO website.
