Bregenz is the smallest of Austria's state capitals and the country's only city directly on Lake Constance. The compact Untere Stadt by the harbour and the well-preserved Obere Stadt on the hill above it sit between the lake shore and the Pfänder ridge, with the Pfänderbahn cable car running from the city centre to a 1,064-metre summit that opens onto Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein at the same time. Bregenz is best known internationally for the Bregenzer Festspiele, the summer festival whose monumental opera stage stands directly in the lake — the largest floating stage in the world.
