Lauterach is a Vorarlberg market town directly east of Bregenz, on the floor of the Rhine valley near the Lake Constance shore. Lauterach is a Vorarlberg market town directly east of Bregenz, on the flat floor of the Rhine valley between Lake Constance and the foothills of the Bregenzerwald. The town has a population of around ten thousand but an unusually high industrial concentration for its size: the Doppelmayr group (the world's largest cable-car manufacturer), the Meusburger mould-making works and Tridonic lighting all have headquarters or major plants here, and the wider Lauterach industrial area is one of the most productive of the Vorarlberg Rhine valley. For travellers it is a quiet, low-cost residential base from which the Bregenz lakefront, the Rhine delta nature reserve and the wider Bregenzerwald are all minutes away.
