Overview

Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße is a Salzburg-state market town in the Pinzgau region at the northern entrance of the Großglockner High Alpine Road, the most famous mountain road in Austria. The town sits where the Salzach valley meets the road that climbs to the foot of the Großglockner, the country's highest peak, and serves as a base for travellers heading into Hohe Tauern National Park, Zell am See and the Kaprun glacier ski region.

Travel

Bruck an der Großglocknerstraße is the gateway town for one of the most famous mountain roads in the Alps. The Salzach river runs through the valley floor and meets the start of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße here — the 48-kilometre toll road that climbs over the Hochtor pass to the foot of the Großglockner, Austria's highest peak. Travellers stop in Bruck before or after the drive, refuel at the village petrol stations, and use the town as a quiet base for the wider Pinzgau region: the Zell am See lake town and the Kaprun glacier ski area are minutes away to the north-west, the Hohe Tauern National Park spreads south, and the parallel Tauern railway line provides easy onward connections to Salzburg and Carinthia. The village itself is a working market community rather than a resort, which is part of its appeal.

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße starts immediately south of the town and climbs to the Edelweißspitze viewpoint at 2,571 metres and the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe terrace facing the Pasterze glacier and the Großglockner itself. The road is seasonal — typically early May to early November depending on snow — and the toll is paid per vehicle at the entry station. Allow most of a day for the round trip with stops.
