Overview

Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg, on the eastern shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee) where Austria, Germany and Switzerland meet — a small lakeside city best known for the Bregenzer Festspiele, the world's largest floating opera stage on the lake, and the Pfänder mountain whose cable car climbs to a panorama spanning all three countries.

Travel

Bregenz is the smallest of Austria's state capitals and the country's only city directly on Lake Constance. The compact Untere Stadt by the harbour and the well-preserved Obere Stadt on the hill above it sit between the lake shore and the Pfänder ridge, with the Pfänderbahn cable car running from the city centre to a 1,064-metre summit that opens onto Switzerland, Germany and Liechtenstein at the same time. Bregenz is best known internationally for the Bregenzer Festspiele, the summer festival whose monumental opera stage stands directly in the lake — the largest floating stage in the world. Beyond the festival, the lakeside promenade, the modernist Kunsthaus Bregenz, the Vorarlbergmuseum and the harbour quarter give the city a year-round rhythm; the Bregenzerwald villages and the Pfänder hiking network sit directly behind it.

The Bregenzer Festspiele in July and August is one of Europe's most distinctive opera events. The stage stands in the lake itself, the audience sits on a tiered tribune on the shore, and the productions — typically a single opera repeated across two consecutive seasons — are built around vast water-based stagecraft. Even outside the festival weeks the stage and its current production sculpture remain visible from the lakeside promenade.
