United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates on the Arabian Peninsula, best known for Dubai's record-breaking skyline and Abu Dhabi's cultural landmarks, alongside quieter emirates like Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Most visitors receive a free visa stamped on arrival, with the length of stay set by nationality and a passport valid at least six months beyond entry required. The UAE enforces strict exit controls, so outstanding debts, legal disputes or uncancelled work visas can result in travel bans.

UAE Visa & Entry System
The UAE keeps entry simple for most visitors: a free visa is stamped into the passport on arrival, with no advance application or online form, and the length of stay is set by nationality — commonly 30 days, for some passports 90 days within 180 — so confirm the allowance for your own passport before booking. Work, study and residence each need their own visa obtained before arrival; tourist entry authorises none of the three.
Before you travel
Passport and ticket
A passport valid at least six months beyond entry, and a return or onward ticket.
Documents refused at the border
Passports with an X sex marker and 12-page US emergency passports.
Extensions
At the authorities' discretion — Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, elsewhere the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship — and never guaranteed; overstay fines compound daily, so act before the visa expires.
Work visas and the medical
Employer-sponsored, with a medical examination after arrival covering HIV, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, leprosy and pregnancy; examinations done outside the UAE are not recognised.
Diplomatic and official passports
Need a visa before arrival, including for transit.
Leaving by land
A departure fee applies at land borders, GCC citizens exempt; the amount is set and revised by the authorities, so confirm it before driving out.
Exit controls
Outstanding debts, unresolved legal matters or an uncancelled work visa can trigger a travel ban that prevents departure — for residents, former residents and visitors alike.
Language requirement
No UAE visa or residence permit tests Arabic: English is the working language of the private sector, and government offices serve in both. Nationality is the exception — knowledge of Arabic is among the conditions for naturalisation, beside long residence.
Certificates, tools and tutorsVisa types
Free Visa on Arrival
Tourism, sightseeing, short business meetings, shopping, beach holidays and cultural visits. The stay granted is set by nationality — 30 days is the common allowance, with some passports receiving 90 days within a 180-day period from first entry, usable continuously or split across multiple visits. Requirements: passport valid 6 months beyond entry, yellow fever certificate if arriving from a risk country, sufficient funds, onward ticket. Only M or F sex markers are accepted. Extensions possible at the immigration authorities' discretion; overstay fines accumulate daily.
Work / Employment Visa
Employment with a UAE employer, professional assignments and long-term work. Must be arranged before arrival through the employer as sponsor — tourist entry does not authorise work. Working on a visit visa requires a probationary work permit from the Ministry of Labour, capped at three months; unauthorised work risks fines, imprisonment and deportation. A comprehensive medical examination is mandatory after arrival, covering HIV, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, leprosy and pregnancy. Examinations conducted outside the UAE are not recognised.
Student Visa
Study at UAE universities and educational institutions, academic programmes and language courses. Must be arranged before arrival through the sponsoring institution. Requirements: acceptance letter, valid passport, photographs, academic qualifications, proof of financial means, and the medical examination after arrival.
Residence Permit
Long-term residence, family sponsorship, retirement, property ownership and extended stays. Applied for through a sponsor — an employer, a family member, or property ownership for eligible nationalities. Includes the comprehensive medical examination, Emirates ID registration and applicable fees. Holders are subject to the exit controls described above: an uncancelled permit is one of the commonest causes of a departure ban, and cancelling a previous visa through the proper channels is mandatory before applying for a new one.
Diplomatic / Official Visa
Diplomatic assignments, official government business and work for international organisations. Holders of diplomatic or official passports must obtain a visa before arrival — transit passengers are not exempt, which catches people out. Non-compliance results in entry denial.
Guides
The UAE is a land of superlatives and contrasts, where desert meets futuristic skyline and centuries-old Bedouin heritage coexists with the most ambitious architectural projects on earth. Dubai anchors the country's record-breaking side — the Burj Khalifa's observation decks, the Dubai Mall's scale, and Palm Jumeirah's engineering — while Old Dubai's Creek, souks and Al Fahidi heritage district tell a quieter, older story just minutes away. Abu Dhabi balances that ambition with cultural depth: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to enter and breathtaking at sunset, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi brings world art to the Gulf under its rain-of-light dome. The desert itself is an experience in its own right — dune bashing, camel riding at sunset, and nights under the stars in Bedouin camps. Beyond the big two emirates, Ras Al Khaimah offers mountain adventure and the world's longest zipline, while Fujairah's Gulf of Oman coast gives uncrowded beaches and snorkelling. The country's cosmopolitan population shows up on every menu, from shawarma stands to fine dining hundreds of metres above the ground.

Frequently asked questions
Do US citizens need a visa to visit the UAE?
No advance visa is needed — US citizens receive a free 30-day visa stamped into their passport on arrival, with no online application or fee. A passport valid at least six months beyond entry and a standard M or F sex marker are required — confirm the current terms before travel.
How long can UK citizens stay in the UAE without a visa?
UK citizens receive 90 days within any 180-day period on arrival, usable in one continuous stretch or split across multiple visits, with no advance application or fee required — confirm the current terms before travel.
Can I extend my UAE visa on arrival?
Extensions are possible but not guaranteed, granted at immigration authorities' discretion — through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, or the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship in other emirates. It's worth applying well before the visa expires rather than close to the deadline.
What happens if I overstay my UAE visa?
Overstay fines accumulate daily and can reach significant amounts the longer they go unresolved. Act as soon as a visa is approaching expiry rather than waiting, since unresolved overstays can also complicate future entry.
Can I work in the UAE on a tourist visa on arrival?
No. Tourist entry does not authorise employment — working without the proper visa is punishable by fines, imprisonment and deportation. Employment requires a work visa arranged before arrival, sponsored by the employer.
When is the best time to visit the UAE?
October to April is the comfortable season, with temperatures generally in the 20-30°C range. Summer, June to September, regularly exceeds 45°C with high humidity, making outdoor activities like desert safaris and beach time considerably less pleasant.
Is alcohol available in the UAE?
Yes, in licensed hotels and restaurants in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, though it's restricted or unavailable in Sharjah, which maintains a dry-emirate policy. Dining and alcohol service hours also shift during Ramadan, when many venues adjust to daylight fasting hours.
Do I need to worry about outstanding debts before leaving the UAE?
Yes. The UAE enforces strict exit controls, and outstanding debts, legal disputes or an uncancelled work visa can trigger a travel ban preventing departure. Resolving any financial or legal matters, including formally cancelling a previous visa, is essential before attempting to leave.
