Introduction

Ethiopia's largest region by area, wrapping entirely around Addis Ababa and running from the Bale Mountains' Afro-alpine plateau in the south-east to the Kaffa and Jimma forests in the south-west, where Coffea arabica grows wild in its evolutionary homeland.

Discover Oromia

Bale Mountains National Park holds the largest single population of Ethiopian wolves anywhere — a genuinely distinct group from the smaller population in the Simien Mountains further north, both isolated from each other by lowland terrain the wolves can't cross, and together representing the entire world population of Africa's rarest carnivore. The Sanetti Plateau, at over 4,000 metres, is the largest expanse of Afro-alpine habitat on the continent, its short-grass moorland and giant lobelia plants supporting the wolves alongside endemic rodent species they hunt almost exclusively. Below the plateau, the Harenna Forest drops into genuinely different terrain — dense, moss-draped cloud forest home to lions, leopards and Bale monkeys, a habitat contrast within a single park that few other reserves in Africa can match.

Ways to Experience This Destination

Bale Mountains National Park

The largest surviving population of Ethiopian wolves, the Sanetti Plateau's Afro-alpine moorland and the cloud forest of Harenna below it.

Sof Omar Caves

One of Africa's longest cave systems, carved by an underground river through limestone, with genuine religious significance for local communities.

Kaffa & Jimma Coffee Forests

Coffee's wild evolutionary homeland — Coffea arabica still grows as forest understorey, protected within the UNESCO Kafa Biosphere Reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Genuinely, yes — they're separate ranges with separate, isolated populations of Ethiopian wolves, and Bale adds the Harenna cloud forest, a habitat with no equivalent in the Simiens. Visitors choosing between the two, or visiting both, get meaningfully different landscapes and wildlife rather than a repeat of the same trip.
