Lower Guinea: Waterfalls and a Beach Within Reach of the Capital

Lower Guinea is the green coastal region around Conakry, and the countryside closest to the capital. Its waterfalls and its mainland beach are reached by road, in the same shared taxis and cars hired with a driver that carry travellers across the country. Most of these trips take a single day from the city, and a night in Kindia or on the coast at Bel Air makes a longer one. At the falls, the month of the visit matters more than anything else.

Dubréka and the Soumba falls

Dubréka lies north-east of the capital, beyond its outer suburbs, with Mount Kakoulima rising behind the town. The Soumba falls are close by, at the foot of the mountain, where the river drops over a rock face among trees into a pool. They are a favourite outing for families from Conakry, so the site fills at weekends and is quietest on a weekday morning. The fall is fed by the rains, and its flow follows them through the year.

Kindia and the Bridal Veil falls

Kindia is the main town on the road inland between Conakry and Mamou, and the market town of a fruit-growing district: mangoes, pineapples and bananas from the farms around it fill its market and the stalls along the road. The Bridal Veil falls, the Voile de la Mariée, lie a short drive outside the town, where the water spreads thinly over a broad rock face like the veil of its name. Like the Soumba, they carry the most water in the rains and the weeks after them. Kindia is also the first stage of the road from Conakry to the Fouta Djallon, and the falls can be visited on the way up.

Bel Air on Cap Verga

North of the capital the coast is cut by mangrove creeks and river mouths, and on the headland of Cap Verga, in the prefecture of Boffa, it opens onto a long sandy beach: Bel Air. The drive is longer than the one to Dubréka, so the beach is easier with a night there than as a day out from the city. Beachwear stays on the sand; in the villages and on the road, modest dress is the custom of a largely Muslim country.

Frequently asked questions

Which waterfall near Conakry is worth a day trip?

The Soumba falls at Dubréka make the easier day: they are the nearer of the two. The Bridal Veil falls lie further away, outside Kindia on the main road inland, and suit a day spent in the town or a stop on the way inland. Either way the car leaves early, to be clear of the city's traffic, and is back before nightfall, since journeys between towns are made by daylight.

When do the Soumba falls have water?

They are fullest during the rains, from May to October, and in the weeks after them. As the dry season goes on the flow drops, and towards its end, in March and April, the falls can thin to a trickle or stop altogether. The early dry season, from about November, is the time to go: the roads have dried out and the falls still run well.

Is there a beach near Conakry on the mainland?

Yes: Bel Air, on the headland of Cap Verga north of the city, is a mainland beach visitors drive to. It is a longer journey than the boat ride to the Loos Islands, whose beaches lie a short crossing off the tip of the peninsula and make the easier beach day from the capital.
