Frequently asked questions
Do New Zealand passport holders need a visa for Thailand?
Not for stays of up to 60 days — tourism, family visits, and short business trips are all covered by Thailand's visa exemption for New Zealand passports. You must still register the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival. Working, studying, retiring, or staying longer requires an e-Visa applied for online before travel.
How do I apply for a Thai visa from New Zealand?
Entirely online, through the official Thai e-Visa portal — the Wellington embassy no longer takes paper applications at the counter. Pick the category that fits (Non-Immigrant B for work, ED for study, O for family or retirement, or the Destination Thailand Visa for remote workers), upload your documents, and pay the non-refundable fee online. New Zealand residents are processed under the Wellington embassy.
What is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)?
A free online arrival registration that every foreign traveller — visa-exempt or not — must complete within three days before arriving in Thailand. It replaced the old paper arrival card, and it is not a visa: it neither grants nor extends any right to stay.
Which Pacific countries does the Thai embassy in Wellington cover?
Beyond New Zealand, the embassy is formally accredited to Samoa, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tuvalu, and Tokelau. Residents of those places deal with Wellington for Thai visas — applications themselves go through the online e-Visa portal — and for consular matters.
What are the Thai embassy's visa-section hours in Wellington?
The visa counter is open Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 12:00, within office hours of 09:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00; other consular counters also open 14:00 to 16:00. The embassy closes on Thai and New Zealand public holidays. Email visa@thaiembassynz.org.nz before visiting — applications are lodged online, so most visits need only document checks.
Where do Thai nationals in New Zealand renew a passport or get emergency help?
At the Wellington embassy: passport@thaiembassynz.org.nz handles Thai passport issuance and renewal, legalization@thaiembassynz.org.nz takes document legalisation, and consular@thaiembassynz.org.nz covers general consular matters. In an emergency outside office hours, Thai nationals can call 021 896 292.
