Introduction

Ruggell is Liechtenstein's northernmost municipality, on the Rhine plain where the river and the Eschnerberg meet the Austrian border.

Overview

Ruggell is Liechtenstein's nature corner. The Ruggeller Riet, a peat-land reserve of fens, ponds and meadows, turns blue with Siberian iris at the end of May and the start of June, and storks nest here again. The Rhine dike and its gravel banks are made for walking, cycling and inline skating, and the Liechtenstein Trail passes through: its fourth stage ends in the village and the last one, to Schaanwald, starts here.

Discover Ruggell

The Ruggeller Riet

The Ruggeller Riet is a peat-land nature reserve in the far north of the country — fens, ponds, hedges and old meadows that shelter many endangered plants and animals, including storks, which have returned to breed. Its great moment is the flowering of the Siberian iris at the end of May and the start of June, when large areas turn into a blue carpet. Paths cross the reserve; keep to them and leave dogs on the lead.

The Rhine at Ruggell

Where the inland canal meets the Rhine, its mouth has been returned to a natural state, with a barbecue spot in the Weienau area. Along the river, the gravel banks and the dike are popular for walking, cycling and inline skating, and the dike path joins the Rhine cycle route that runs the length of the country to Balzers.

Küefer-Martis-Huus

Ruggell's culture centre occupies the Küefer-Martis-Huus, a listed 18th-century house restored as a meeting place with a museum section, much of it on the theme of water, plus exhibitions and events through the year.
