Liechtenstein in Two Days: Why One Night Changes the Trip
Liechtenstein is usually treated as a stop: a few hours in Vaduz on a journey through the Rhine valley. That covers the capital well. What it misses is the other half of the country — the mountains above Triesenberg and Malbun — and a single night is what joins the two, because overnight guests receive the WELCOME Adventure Pass, which makes every bus free, including the one up to Malbun.

Day 1: Vaduz and the valley
Spend the first day in Vaduz: the museums on the pedestrian Städtle — with the pass, the PostMuseum is free and the NationalMuseum, the TreasureChamber and the Kunstmuseum are discounted — the path below the castle for the view across the Rhine to the Swiss mountains, and a glass of the Prince's own wine. In the late afternoon, walk across the covered Old Rhine Bridge to the Swiss bank and back.
Day 2: the mountains, or a stage of the trail
On the second day, take bus 21 up through Triesenberg, home of the Walser Museum, to Malbun, for the Sareis chairlift and the high trails in summer or the slopes in winter. If you would rather stay low, walk one stage of the Liechtenstein Trail instead and take the bus back to your base.
Where to sleep, and why it matters
Vaduz suits a valley-first stay; Malbun's mountain hotels suit a winter or hiking trip. Rooms across the border in Buchs, Sargans or Feldkirch usually cost less, and for a day visit that is a good trade — but the Adventure Pass is for guests staying in Liechtenstein, so a night across the border gives up the free buses and the museum benefits that make the second day easy.
