Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Spain visa at the Spanish Embassy in Lima?
No. The embassy chancery on Jorge Basadre does not take visa applications. All visas for Spain — national visas for study, work or residence, and Schengen visas for non-Peruvian nationals resident in Peru — are processed by the Consulate General of Spain at Calle Los Pinos 490 in San Isidro, by prior appointment.
Do Peruvian citizens need a visa to visit Spain?
No visa is needed for short stays. Since 2016 Peruvian passport holders can enter Spain and the rest of the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, family visits or business. Studying, working or residing in Spain still requires a national visa obtained before travel through the Consulate General in Lima.
What does the Spanish Embassy in Lima actually handle?
The embassy manages the government-to-government relationship: political and economic diplomacy, trade promotion, cultural programming and development cooperation with Peru. Individual procedures — visas, passports, registrations, legalisations — belong to the Consulate General, which is a separate office a few blocks away.
What should a Spanish citizen in Peru do in an emergency?
Outside office hours, Spanish citizens facing a genuine emergency in Peru — an accident, arrest, hospitalisation or death of a relative — can call the consular emergency line +51 995 655 898. Routine matters are handled by the Consulate General during its morning opening hours.
