Every July and August, the Ohrid Summer Festival turns the old town into a genuine cultural event rather than just a heritage backdrop — classical music, opera and theatre performances staged across multiple venues, including the town's ancient Roman-era theatre, one of the few classical theatres in the Balkans still used for its original purpose. Above the old town, Samuel's Fortress, built on the site of earlier Byzantine fortifications and expanded under Tsar Samuel in the tenth century, offers a genuine walk along substantial surviving walls and towers, with panoramic views over the lake and the old town's terracotta rooftops that most day visitors focused on the churches below never see. The old town itself is built largely in a distinctive vernacular style — timber-framed houses with upper floors that overhang the street below, a construction technique that maximised living space on narrow, steeply sloped plots while keeping ground-floor frontage compact, still visible in well-preserved examples throughout the old quarter's stepped lanes. And despite Ohrid's heritage reputation, the town has a genuine beach culture too: several swimming spots along the lakeside, including areas near Kaneo, draw locals and visitors alike through the summer for a swim in the lake's exceptionally clear water — a leisure side to the town that the churches and monasteries don't suggest exists.
