United Kingdom

The United Kingdom comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with London as its capital. Most visa-exempt nationalities, including the US, Canada, Australia and most EU countries, must now hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling, even though a visa itself isn't required for tourism, business or short study of up to six months.

UK Visa Overview

Nationals of visa-exempt countries (the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and most others) do not need a visa for tourism, business or short study of up to 6 months — but since 8 January 2025 they must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. EU member states (except Ireland) plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City joined the requirement later, from 2 April 2025. The ETA is not a visa; it is a pre-travel permission similar to the US ESTA, applied for online or via the official UK ETA app for a fee (check the current amount), typically approved within a few hours to 3 working days, and valid for 2 years (or until passport expiry) with unlimited entries. Since 25 February 2026 the “No Permission, No Travel” rule has been in full force: airlines check ETA status at check-in and are legally required to deny boarding to anyone without a valid one, including passengers who transit through the UK. Longer stays, employment and full-time study require an actual visa — common routes are the Standard Visitor Visa, work visas (Skilled Worker and others), the Youth Mobility Scheme for 18-30 year-olds from eligible countries, and Student visas. It's essential to determine your specific requirement — ETA vs. visa — before booking flights.

Visa types

Fee applies, check current amount; valid 2 years or until passport expiry, unlimited entries within that period; each visit limited to 6 months. Mandatory since 8 January 2025 for most non-European visa-exempt nationalities, and since 2 April 2025 for EU member states (except Ireland), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein; strictly enforced at check-in (“No Permission, No Travel”) since 25 February 2026 — airlines must deny boarding without one.

For visa-exempt nationalities visiting for tourism, business, family visits or short study — applied for online or via the official UK ETA app before travel.

Guides

The United Kingdom packs four distinct nations into a relatively small island group. London holds the country's biggest concentration of sights — the Tower of London, the British Museum and National Gallery (both free), Buckingham Palace and a West End theatre district that rivals Broadway. Edinburgh's medieval castle sits on volcanic rock above the Royal Mile, and the city hosts the world's largest arts festival each August. The Scottish Highlands carry Glen Coe, the Isle of Skye and the whisky distilleries of Speyside, while the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers fell walking among England's highest peaks. Oxford and Cambridge open centuries-old colleges to visitors, Bath pairs Roman baths with Georgian architecture, and Stonehenge stands on Salisbury Plain. Cornwall's Atlantic coast, Snowdonia's mountains and castles, and the Giant's Causeway's basalt columns in Northern Ireland round out the geographic range. Throughout the country, the pub remains a genuine social institution — real ale, Sunday roasts and pub quizzes — alongside a music heritage running from the Beatles to contemporary British artists.
