British Consulate General in Milan

UK visa applicants resident in northern Italy use the designated UK Visa Application Centre for biometrics and document submission, with decisions issued by UK Visas and Immigration; the British Consulate-General does not provide visas or individual visa advice. From Via S. Paolo 7 in central Milan, the post represents the UK government in northern Italy and provides emergency consular assistance to British nationals. Its case mix is shaped heavily by tourism: Milan, the lakes (Como, Garda and Maggiore), Venice, the Dolomites and Cinque Terre attract very substantial British visitor numbers, and theft of a passport or money in busy tourist areas, including Venice's piazzas and Milan's transport hubs, is a recurring reason for contact. The consulate also serves the long-standing British professional community in Milan's fashion, design, finance and education sectors. The British Embassy in Rome leads the wider bilateral relationship, while visa, immigration and status applications remain the responsibility of the relevant UK government service. In-person consular services are by appointment through the FCDO contact route.

The consulate does not issue visas or advise on individual applications. Italian citizens can use an Electronic Travel Authorisation for eligible UK visits of up to six months, unless they already hold another qualifying UK immigration status; work, long-term study, family migration and other non-visitor purposes require the appropriate permission. Check the current rules with UK Visas and Immigration before travel and use the designated application service when biometrics are required.

The post assists British nationals in northern Italy during emergencies, including serious illness, arrest, crime and bereavement, and can arrange an emergency travel document when a passport cannot be used in time for travel. Routine passport applications are handled by HM Passport Office, while only the notarial and documentary services listed by the FCDO are available locally.

The consulate and the Department for Business and Trade support UK–Italy commercial links across northern Italy, including fashion and design, financial services, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, technology, food and drink, education and clean growth. The consulate represents the UK government in northern Italy and is the regional consular contact for British nationals there. The FCDO contact service routes enquiries according to the caller's location, need and urgency; the British Embassy in Rome leads the national bilateral relationship and also covers San Marino.

Public access is by appointment only. Contact the FCDO first so staff can assess the service required and provide instructions; visa applicants must use UKVI and the designated application centre rather than booking with the consulate.

Call 112 for an immediate police, medical or fire emergency in Italy, then contact the FCDO if British consular help is needed. A Schengen visa or Italian residence permit does not by itself grant entry to the UK, and consular staff cannot influence UKVI decisions.
