Frequently asked questions
Which Indian states does the Mumbai Consulate-General cover?
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, and the Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli union territories. Schengen visa-intake operationally covers the same catchment via the VFS Sweden centre in Mumbai, with decisioning at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi.
Where do I submit a Swedish Schengen visa application in Mumbai?
At the VFS Sweden Visa Application Centre in Mumbai (Bandra-Kurla Complex area), not at the Consulate-General itself. The Consulate-General does not operate a public visa-application counter for Schengen short-stay visas — that intake is contracted to VFS Global per Schengen-wide practice. Applicants book online through the VFS Sweden India portal, attend in person for biometric capture, and pay the Schengen fee plus VFS service fee. Decisioning on the application happens at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi.
What consular services are available directly at the Consulate-General?
The Consulate-General serves the Swedish national community in the western Indian states: Swedish passport renewal coordination with the Embassy, emergency travel-certificate issuance for Swedish nationals who have lost their passports, certifications of signatures and copies, civil-status notification support, voter-registration coordination during Swedish election windows, and operational support for Swedish nationals in detention, hospitalisation or repatriation cases. The Consul-General is the on-the-ground front line for Swedish consular emergencies in the western states.
When are the Consulate-General's visiting hours?
Monday 14:00–16:00 and Tuesday 10:00–12:00, by prior appointment only. Appointments are booked through the consulate's online booking system on the Sweden Abroad portal or by email to generalkonsulat.mumbai@gov.se. The phone switchboard +91 22 6113 2300 is reachable across the working week for general enquiries even outside visiting hours.
When should I contact the Mumbai CG instead of the New Delhi Embassy?
If you are physically in the western Indian states (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa) and need Swedish consular help, contact the Mumbai Consulate-General first — particularly for passport coordination, in-person consular emergencies in the Mumbai-Pune corridor, and operational support in Goa for the long-stay Swedish community. For visa decisioning, migration-permit appeals, OCI-equivalent Swedish consular paperwork that requires central decisioning, or matters affecting Indian states outside the Mumbai catchment, the route is through the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi. Out-of-hours emergencies anywhere in India route through the UD Sweden Crisis Management Centre in Stockholm on +46 8 405 50 05, available 24/7.
