Practical Money Tips

Change dollars or euros at an exchange bureau

US dollars and euros are the foreign currencies most easily changed into Rwandan francs, at the exchange bureaus and banks of Kigali and the larger towns; pounds sterling are changed in Kigali too. Recent, clean notes without tears or writing on them are the ones to bring, as older and worn notes may be refused, and the francs are counted at the counter before leaving it.

Cash machines in the towns, none in the parks

Kigali has cash machines across the city, and Musanze, Rubavu and Huye have them at their banks. In the countryside they thin out, and there are none in the national parks, so the francs for days at Nyungwe, at Akagera or around the volcanoes are drawn in town beforehand. Cash is drawn by day and little of it carried at a time, one of the everyday precautions in Rwanda.

Cards at hotels, lodges and larger Kigali businesses

Foreign cards are taken at hotels and lodges and at the larger restaurants, supermarkets and shops of Kigali. Small restaurants, market stalls and motorbike taxis, and most businesses outside the capital, take cash. When booking a room or a tour, it is worth asking whether the bill can be settled by card.

Francs in small notes for everyday payments

Markets such as Kimironko in Kigali, small restaurants, roadside stalls and taxis are paid in Rwandan francs in cash, and on a motorbike taxi the fare is agreed before setting off. Small notes are worth keeping: outside Kigali, change for a large note is not always at hand.

Note: Always check current exchange rates before traveling. Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and authorized money changers.

Common Money Questions

What currency does Rwanda use?

The Rwandan franc (RWF), Rwanda's own currency, in notes and coins. It is separate from the shillings of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and from the Burundian franc, so money left over from a neighbouring country is changed at an exchange bureau rather than spent. Everyday prices are given in francs.

Can I pay in US dollars?

In tourism, often. Lodges, tour operators and the national parks quote their prices in US dollars, and many accept payment in dollars as well as by card. Everyday purchases are paid in francs.

How is a gorilla permit paid for?

A permit for the gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park is booked well ahead through the park authority, the Rwanda Development Board, either directly online or through a tour operator who books it as part of a trip. It is priced in US dollars and paid in full when it is booked, by card online or to the tour operator. Without a paid permit there is no trek, so the booking comes before the rest of the trip is fixed.

Do foreign cards work in Rwandan cash machines?

Most machines of the larger banks in Kigali take foreign cards, but not every machine takes every card, and a machine can be empty or offline. A second card on a different card network is a useful backup, especially for a trip that spends days away from the towns.

Do visitors use mobile money?

Rarely. Paying by phone is how much of Rwanda pays, from market stalls to motorbike taxis, but it runs on a local SIM card and a local account, and a short stay is easier in cash and by card.

Is tipping expected in Rwanda?

In everyday life there is no firm custom, though a tip is appreciated; on a trek or a tour it is usual. Guides, trackers and porters on the gorilla and chimpanzee treks are tipped at the end of the walk, and a driver at the end of the trip; a porter hired at the start of a trek is paid for the day, and the tip comes on top. In restaurants, rounding up for good service is welcome. Tips are given in francs or in US dollars.

What can I do with francs left over at the end of the trip?

Spend them, or change them back at an exchange bureau in Kigali before flying out: Rwandan francs are hard to change far from Rwanda. Changing money in stages through the trip, rather than all at once on arrival, keeps the leftover small.
