Introduction
Diourbel Region holds Touba, the seat of the Mouride order — its Great Mosque's architecture and scale, and what a visitor should know before arriving.
Overview
The Great Mosque of Touba is one of the largest mosques in sub-Saharan Africa, built around the tomb of the Mouride order's founder and expanded in phases from the late 19th century through to the mid-20th, its tallest minaret — the Lamp Fall, named for the lamp said to guide the faithful — visible from a considerable distance across the flat surrounding countryside. Touba operates under its own distinct local customs rather than typical Senegalese municipal administration: the city bans the sale of alcohol and tobacco outright, and modest dress is expected of all visitors, mosque-goers or not. Outside the annual Magal pilgrimage, Touba is a quieter, functioning city built almost entirely around the mosque and the religious institutions that surround it, and visitors are welcome to view the mosque's exterior and courtyards respectfully at other times of year.
Discover Diourbel Region
The mosque's scale reflects its role as the spiritual centre of a movement with millions of adherents rather than a single congregation's place of worship — successive expansions since the original structure was completed in 1963 have added minarets, courtyards and prayer halls capable of holding enormous crowds, a scale that becomes obvious only during the Magal pilgrimage but is visible in the building's footprint year-round. The Lamp Fall minaret, the tallest of several, rises well above the surrounding low-rise city and functions as a landmark visible for kilometres across the flat Diourbel countryside, a practical orientation point for a city that can otherwise feel like a maze of similar low buildings radiating outward from the mosque complex.
