Frequently asked questions
Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Chile?
Indian nationals apply for a Chilean visa in advance of travel. Tourist, business, student and work visas are lodged online through Chile's Sistema de Atención Consular (SAC), where the system lists the documents for the chosen category and the applicant's nationality; the consular section in Delhi (or the Consulate General in Mumbai, for its district) then calls the applicant in for the interview and passport submission.
Does the Delhi Embassy cover Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka or the Maldives?
Yes. The Chilean Embassy in New Delhi is concurrently accredited to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives. Residents of any of these four countries — both visa applicants and Chilean citizens needing consular services — route through the Delhi Consular Section.
How does the online visa application work?
Applicants create their file in the Sistema de Atención Consular (SAC), select nationality, purpose and the consulate (Delhi or Mumbai), upload the documents the system lists and pay the consular fee through the system. The consular section reviews the file and schedules the in-person step for the interview and passport submission. A complete online file before the visit avoids a wasted trip for applicants resident outside the National Capital Region.
Is there a Chilean consulate in Mumbai or elsewhere in India?
Yes — Chile runs a Consulate General in Mumbai, in the Platina Building at Bandra Kurla Complex (unit 1202B, 12th floor; +91 22 6905 3900), alongside the Embassy and its Consular Section in New Delhi. Applicants and Chilean citizens in western India use the Mumbai post; the rest of India and the four concurrent countries use Delhi.
I am a Chilean citizen living in India — what services does the Embassy provide?
Chilean citizens resident in India, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Nepal or Sri Lanka are served for passport renewal and re-issue, lost-passport replacement, civil registration of births, marriages and deaths, voter registration for Chilean elections abroad, document legalisation and apostille, and certificates required for use in India. The Consular Section in Delhi attends Monday to Friday 09:00–17:00 on +91 11 4310 0400 / 4310 0407; the Consulate General in Mumbai serves western India.
What is the India–Chile Preferential Trade Agreement and why does it matter to a traveller?
The bilateral PTA, in force since 2007 and substantively expanded thereafter, gives a defined product list tariff preferences both ways. For an ordinary traveller it doesn't change visa rules or duty-free allowances directly, but it sits behind the commercial relationship — the same framework that makes the Chile Summit India biennial event a fixture in the bilateral calendar and that puts copper, lithium and Chilean fresh fruit on the regular Mumbai and Chennai port-arrival lists.
