Penjikent, a Silk Road City Above the Zeravshan
Penjikent lies in the valley of the Zeravshan river in the north-west of Tajikistan, close to the border with Uzbekistan and Samarkand, which lies about sixty kilometres to the west. Above the modern town stand the excavated ruins of ancient Penjikent, a Sogdian city of the Silk Road, and the valley around it holds the far older settlement of Sarazm and the mausoleum of the poet Rudaki. Penjikent is also the gateway to the Seven Lakes and the western Fann Mountains.

Ancient Penjikent
On a terrace above the river, the ruins of ancient Penjikent spread over a hillside: the outlines of streets, houses, workshops and temples of a Sogdian city that flourished from about the fifth to the eighth century, with its citadel on a rise beside it. The walls stand only a little above the ground, but the plan of the city is clear, and its excavations brought to light some of the finest wall paintings of the Sogdian world.
The town museum
The museum in the town, named after Rudaki, shows finds from ancient Penjikent and Sarazm, among them copies and fragments of the Sogdian wall paintings, whose originals are mostly kept in great museums elsewhere, together with the history and crafts of the valley.
Sarazm
A short drive west of Penjikent, towards Samarkand and the border crossings, Sarazm is a settlement far older than the Sogdian city, a centre of farming, metalwork and trade from about the fourth and third millennia BC. It is Tajikistan's first World Heritage site, and its excavated foundations can be seen beside a small museum.
Rudaki's mausoleum at Panjrud
Up the Zeravshan valley to the east, in the village of Panjrud, a mausoleum marks the grave of Rudaki, the poet honoured as the father of Persian poetry, who was born in the valley. The drive up the valley passes villages among orchards beneath the mountains.
Getting there and on
From Dushanbe the road runs north through the Anzob tunnel to Ayni, then west down the Zeravshan valley to Penjikent, a long day's drive through the mountains. Penjikent is the base for the Seven Lakes and the western Fann Mountains, reached south of the town, and its bazaar is the place to stock up before a trek.
