Overview
Portugal is a member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Portuguese nationals with a valid ESTA can travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon handles other visa categories for residents of Portugal: student (F-1), exchange (J-1), work (H, L, O), fiancé (K), and all immigrant visa categories including family reunification. There is also a U.S. Consulate in Ponta Delgada, Azores, for residents of the Azores archipelago. The embassy serves a large and rapidly growing American citizen community in Portugal — the country has become a favoured destination for U.S. retirees and digital nomads. Visa Services
Portuguese nationals with a valid ESTA do not need a visa for tourism or business visits to the US (up to 90 days). Consular Services
The ACS unit serves a rapidly growing community of U.S. citizens in Portugal, including retirees, remote workers, dual nationals, and long-term expats. Services include passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, notarial services, and emergency assistance. Portugal's surge in popularity as an American expat destination has made the ACS unit one of the busiest in Southern Europe.

Investment Opportunities
Portugal offers investment opportunities in technology, tourism and hospitality, real estate, renewable energy, and life sciences. Through SelectUSA, the embassy also encourages Portuguese investment into the United States. The country's Golden Visa programme (modified) and NHR tax regime continue to attract U.S. and international investors.

The embassy's Economic Section supports U.S. companies operating in Portugal, advising on investment climate, digital economy policy, and business regulations. Portugal's EU membership, English-language proficiency, and established tech and tourism sectors make it an attractive base for U.S. companies with European or Lusophone-world operations.
Cultural & Educational Programs
The Public Affairs section manages the Fulbright Commission for educational exchange between the U.S. and Portugal, along with cultural and scientific exchange programmes. Lisbon and Porto have developed into major cultural destinations — Lisbon's Alfama, the Sintra palaces (UNESCO), the Douro Valley vineyards, and the Alentejo all draw American visitors in large numbers.

All visa interview and ACS appointments must be booked online via the USTravelDocs portal at ustraveldocs.com. Walk-in services are not available. Special Notes
The embassy is located near the Sete Rios transport hub. Visitors are subject to security screening; electronic devices are not permitted inside. U.S. citizens in Portugal should register with the embassy's STEP programme. Review current U.S. State Department travel advisories before travelling.
