Fiji

Fiji is an archipelago of over 330 islands in the South Pacific — around 110 of them inhabited, anchored by Viti Levu with the capital Suva and the international gateway Nadi — and one of the Pacific's most developed and connected travel hubs. Entry is simple for most visitors: nationals of the visa-exempt list (including the US, UK, EU countries, Australia and Japan) receive a visitor permit on arrival for stays of up to four months, extendable once in-country.

Fiji Visa & Immigration System Overview

Fiji operates one of the Pacific's most visitor-friendly entry systems: nationals of the visa-exempt list — including the United States, United Kingdom, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand and Japan — receive a visitor permit on arrival for tourism stays of up to four months, extendable by a further two months on application in-country (a fee applies — check the current amount). Non-exempt nationalities obtain a visa before travel through a Fijian mission and receive the same permit at the border. Passports must be valid at least six months beyond the planned departure with a blank page for the entry stamp, and arriving travellers should hold an onward or return ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and any visa needed for the next destination. Business visits are a separate track: a business visitor permit (valid 21 days) covers meetings and commercial activity, and employment of any kind requires a work permit arranged through a sponsoring employer. A yellow fever certificate is required only when arriving from a designated transmission-risk country. Cash of F$10,000 or more (or foreign equivalent) must be declared at the border — undeclared amounts risk prosecution. Nadi International Airport is the main gateway, with entry stamps issued on presentation of the documents above.

Visa types

Visa-Free Entry (Tourism)

Up to 4 months; extendable through Immigration

For tourism, family visits, diving, island-hopping and short recreational stays. Available to visa-exempt nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia, NZ, Canada, Japan and others) with no advance application. Requires a passport valid 6+ months with a blank page, proof of funds, an onward/return ticket, accommodation details, and a yellow fever certificate only if arriving from a transmission-risk country. Employment or business activity isn't permitted on this permit.

Business Visitors Permit

21 days; extendable through Immigration

For business meetings, conferences, site visits and exploring investment opportunities — a separate track from tourist entry. Requires an invitation letter from the Fijian host organisation, an employer letter confirming the business purpose, standard travel documents, and a yellow fever certificate if applicable. Doesn't authorise paid employment; a work permit is required for that.

Work Permit

Typically 1 year; renewable with employer

For employment with a Fijian employer, common in tourism, hospitality and specialist sectors where local skills aren't available. A two-stage process: the employer applies for permit approval demonstrating the role's need for foreign expertise, then the successful applicant obtains a work visa. Requires an employment contract, professional qualifications, medical and police clearances, and is tied to the sponsoring employer.

Student Visa/Study Permit

Duration of academic program; renewable

For study at Fijian institutions, including the University of the South Pacific in Suva. Requires an acceptance letter, proof of tuition and living-expense funds, accommodation arrangements and standard travel/medical documents. Full-time enrolment must be maintained; part-time work may be possible with separate authorisation.

Residence Permit/Long-term Visa

1 year initially; renewable for longer periods

For long-term residence beyond the visa-free period — employment, business establishment, retirement or family reunification. Requires proof of the residence purpose (employment contract, business registration, retirement income or family relationship), accommodation, financial means, and standard clearances.

Family/Dependent Visa

Aligned with primary visa holder's status

For spouses, dependent children and other family joining a Fijian citizen, permanent resident, or foreign resident with valid work or residence status. Requires proof of the family relationship and the sponsor's own status and financial capacity to support dependents.

Transit Visa (if required)

24-72 hours; specific to transit duration

For short connections through Nadi International Airport en route to another destination. Most visa-exempt nationalities don't need a separate transit visa for brief connections; travellers from countries requiring advance visas should confirm transit requirements with their airline and Fiji Immigration before travel.

Guides

Fiji refuses to be reduced to a single postcard. This archipelago of over 330 islands in the heart of the South Pacific is simultaneously a luxury honeymoon destination, a backpacker island-hopping circuit, one of the planet's premier diving grounds, a living Polynesian-Melanesian culture, and a place where the word bula — shouted with a grin by every person you pass — is not a tourist slogan but a genuine daily greeting. The Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains west of the main island of Viti Levu deliver the classic South Seas imagery: turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, palm-fringed bures and catamaran ferries linking one island to the next. The diving is world-class and wildly varied: Rainbow Reef off Taveuni is famous for the Great White Wall, a vertical drop-off carpeted in white soft coral; the Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu is one of the largest barrier reefs on earth; Beqa Lagoon hosts bull-shark and tiger-shark feeding dives that draw thrill-seekers from across the globe. On Viti Levu itself, the reality is richer than the brochure — Suva is a genuine Pacific capital with markets, universities and a harbour, while the highland interior holds rainforest reserves, river rafting and sugar-cane valleys. The cultural layer goes deeper than most island destinations: kava ceremonies in iTaukei villages are structured social rituals with real meaning, the lovo earth-oven feast is communal eating at its most elemental, and the Indo-Fijian community descended from indentured labourers adds temples, curries and a second cultural dimension that makes Fiji genuinely bicultural rather than monochromatically tropical.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Fiji?

Most visitors don't: nationals of the visa-exempt list — including the US, UK, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand and Japan — receive a visitor permit on arrival for up to four months, extendable by two more in-country. Arrive with a passport valid six months beyond departure, an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. Business trips are a separate track (the 21-day Business Visitors Permit), and non-exempt nationalities arrange a visa through a Fijian mission before travel.

When is cyclone season in Fiji — and when is the best time to go?

Cyclone season runs November to April, when severe tropical storms can knock out transport and power for days; May to October is the dry season — warm, less humid and the comfortable window for island-hopping, diving and surfing. If you do travel in the wet season, build flexibility into connections and consider insurance with weather cover.

How does island-hopping work in Fiji?

The backbone is the Yasawa Flyer catamaran, running daily from Denarau along the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains, with hop-on passes of five to thirteen days and bure accommodation from backpacker to boutique at each stop. Two practical rules: withdraw cash in Nadi first (there are no ATMs on the Yasawas or outer Mamanucas), and build buffer days into the itinerary — ferries, small planes and seaplanes are all weather-dependent.

Is Fiji only for honeymooners and big budgets?

No — Fiji spans both extremes better than almost any Pacific destination. Private-island resorts charge luxury-hotel rates, but backpacker bures on village land along the Yasawa route cost a small fraction of that, and the island-hopping passes make a multi-island trip genuinely affordable. The reefs, the bula greeting and the lovo feast are the same at both price points.

What should I know before visiting a Fijian village?

Come with respect and a gift of kava root: the sevusevu ceremony — presenting it to the village chief — opens a visit, followed by rounds of kava from the communal tanoa bowl. Dress modestly (a sulu sarong works), remove hats and sunglasses in the village, take shoes off before entering a bure, never touch anyone's head, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies. Organised village tours handle the protocol for you.

Where is the best diving in Fiji?

The country trades as the Soft Coral Capital of the World and earns it: Rainbow Reef off Taveuni holds the Great White Wall, a vertical face draped in white soft coral; the Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu is among the largest barrier reefs on earth; and Beqa Lagoon runs celebrated shark dives with bull and tiger sharks at close range. Water sits at 25-29°C year-round with 15-40 m visibility — snorkellers get world-class coral straight off Mamanuca and Coral Coast beaches.

Can I rely on cards, or do I need cash in Fiji?

Cards work at resorts and in Nadi and Suva; beyond that, cash rules — there are no ATMs on the Yasawas or the outer Mamanucas, so withdraw Fijian dollars before leaving the mainland. Note two border rules as well: amounts of F$10,000 or more must be declared at entry and exit, and the Fijian dollar isn't convertible abroad, so change leftover notes before flying out.
