Afghan Embassy in Rome

Embassy of Afghanistan in Rome, Italy

Overview

The Embassy of Afghanistan in Rome is Afghanistan's diplomatic mission to Italy. Consular procedures have been significantly disrupted since August 2021, and the embassy's operating capacity is more limited than before, though it remains the point of contact for Afghan nationals in Italy and for Italian residents needing to reach Afghan authorities.

Visa Services

All foreign nationals, including Italian citizens, need a visa to enter Afghanistan. Where the embassy is still processing applications, requirements typically include a passport valid at least six months, a passport photo, a completed application form, and a letter of invitation from a host organisation, business partner, NGO, or government body. Tourist visas are issued very rarely; the large majority go to humanitarian workers, journalists, diplomats, and essential business travellers. Applicants should always confirm current procedures directly with the embassy and check the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina) travel advisory before making any plans, as the Farnesina currently advises against all travel to Afghanistan.

Consular Services

The embassy provides passport and travel document services and civil registration for Afghan nationals in Italy, though capacity for these services has been reduced since 2021.

Trade & Export Support

Italy and Afghanistan maintain a long-standing cultural heritage relationship that has continued through the political disruption of recent years — the Italian Archaeological Mission (IsMEO, founded by Giuseppe Tucci in 1957, now ISMEO) worked for decades on the Ghaznavid palaces and the Minaret of Mas'ud III at Ghazni, and Italian-led restoration of Herat's citadel took place after 2001. Formal bilateral trade has been severely constrained since 2021.

Service Area

Italy.

Appointment Information

Appointments and current procedures should be confirmed directly with the embassy, as consular capacity and opening arrangements have changed significantly since 2021.

Special Notes
