Visa Services
The embassy processes visa applications for Austrian citizens and residents planning to visit Costa Rica, as well as for nationals of countries within its consular jurisdiction (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia). Austrian citizens enjoy visa-free access to Costa Rica for tourism and business visits up to 90 days, making visas unnecessary for most short-term travel. However, visas may be required for work permits, student visas, temporary residence, or permanent residence applications. The embassy handles all visa categories for third-country nationals residing in Austria who require entry authorization for Costa Rica. Applicants must submit a completed visa application form, valid passport with at least six months remaining validity, recent passport photographs, proof of financial means, confirmed travel itinerary, and proof of accommodation in Costa Rica. Additional documentation varies by visa type and purpose. Processing times and current fees should be confirmed by contacting the consular section at embcr-at@rree.go.cr before applying.
The embassy actively promotes economic and commercial relations between Costa Rica and Austria, as well as with the other countries under its jurisdiction. Austria is an important economic partner for Costa Rica, with bilateral trade in sectors including machinery, pharmaceuticals, technology, sustainable development solutions, and high-value agriculture. Costa Rica's economy emphasizes innovation-driven sectors such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, technology services, precision manufacturing, sustainable agriculture, and ecotourism—areas that align well with Austrian business expertise and investment interests. The embassy can facilitate business introductions, provide information about investment opportunities and trade regulations, assist with commercial documentation, and connect Austrian companies with Costa Rican trade promotion agencies such as PROCOMER. The embassy works closely with the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and business associations to strengthen bilateral commercial ties and support Austrian companies exploring opportunities in Costa Rica and Central America.
