Introduction
Cairo Governorate is the political and cultural heart of Egypt, encompassing the historic core of Africa's largest city — a 22-million-person megacity that's been a center of power, trade, and civilization for over a thousand years. The governorate itself covers only 453 km² (the greater metropolitan area sprawls much further), but within that compressed space lie the pyramids of Giza at the western edge, the medieval Islamic quarter (UNESCO World Heritage), Coptic Old Cairo, the Belle Époque downtown, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum — the densest concentration of historical layers in the Arab world.
