Frequently asked questions
Do French passport holders need a visa to visit India?
Yes — but the route is straightforward. French citizens are on the Indian e-Visa eligibility list and apply directly online through the Bureau of Immigration's e-Visa portal for tourist, business, medical and conference travel. The 30-day, 1-year and 5-year tourist e-Visa variants are available; the business e-Visa runs up to 1 year multi-entry; the medical e-Visa runs up to 60 days triple-entry. Approval is electronic within a small number of working days and no embassy visit is required for short-stay e-Visa travel.
What does the Marseille Consulate-General handle that the Paris embassy used to handle for southern French residents?
Passport applications and renewals, emergency travel documents, OCI services, document attestation and legalisation, registration of births and marriages, life certificates for Indian pensioners resident in France, and consular protection for Indians in detention or in hospital — all for residents of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Occitanie and Corsica. Before the post opened in February 2025 these procedures required either a TGV trip to Paris or postal exchange with the Paris embassy; they are now handled locally in Marseille.
Which French regions are covered by the Marseille Consulate-General?
Four administrative regions: Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (Marseille, Nice, Cannes, Aix-en-Provence, Toulon), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (Lyon, Grenoble, Saint-Étienne), Occitanie (Toulouse, Montpellier) and Corsica (Ajaccio, Bastia). The northern, central, western and Île-de-France regions remain under the Embassy of India in Paris.
Where is the VFS Global India visa application centre in Marseille?
23 Boulevard de Dunkerque in the 2nd arrondissement of Marseille, near the Joliette district and the Vieux-Port. The centre handles regular-category Indian visa applications (employment, long-term student, research, journalist, film, entry visa and other categories outside the e-Visa scope) for residents of the southern French regions. Appointments are booked online through the VFS Global France website and applicants attend in person for biometric capture and document submission.
Can OCI cardholders use the Marseille Consulate-General?
Yes. Overseas Citizen of India cardholders resident in the southern French catchment can apply for OCI services at the Marseille post directly — new OCI applications for newborn children of OCI parents, OCI renewals (including the lifelong-validity OCI miscellaneous services), and re-issue after passport change. The procedures match those at the Paris embassy and the documentation requirements are set by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Why did India open a Consulate-General in Marseille specifically?
The southern half of France — broadly the regions south of a line from La Rochelle to Strasbourg — accounts for a substantial share of the Indian community in France, the regular travel flow to India through the Mediterranean rail and air system, and bilateral commercial engagement around the Aix-Marseille biotech cluster, the Toulouse aerospace cluster and the Sophia Antipolis technology park. Marseille is also France's largest Mediterranean port and the operational anchor for the southern French commercial system, which made it the natural second French location. The post was inaugurated jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron in February 2025.
