Overview
The Embassy of Ethiopia in Rome is Ethiopia's diplomatic mission to Italy — a historically significant post given Italy's colonial-era ties to Ethiopia — processing visa applications for Italian residents and providing consular services to Ethiopian nationals in Italy.
Visa Services
Ethiopia operates an e-Visa system via evisa.gov.et for most nationalities, applied for and approved online before travel. The e-Visa authorises entry ONLY through Addis Ababa's Bole Airport, not land borders. Some nationalities (including Germans since October 2023) can obtain a visa on arrival at Bole. US citizens MUST obtain the e-Visa before travelling. Requirements: a passport valid at least 6 months with at least 1 blank page, a yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic area, and strict currency-declaration limits (maximum 1,000 ETB and 3,000 USD on entry). Travellers should print and carry a copy of the e-Visa. Overstay fines run 30 USD/day, payable in full in dollars before exit clearance.
Consular Services
The embassy provides passport and travel document services, civil registration, document attestation and legalization, and emergency consular assistance for Ethiopian nationals in Italy.
