Frequently asked questions
Do Mexican passport holders need a visa to enter India?
Yes. Mexican passport holders are not visa-free for India, but they are on the Indian e-Visa list. The standard path is the online e-Visa application through the Indian government portal in one of the popular Tourist tiers (30-day double-entry, 1-year multi-entry or 5-year multi-entry), approved by email within roughly three to five business days. Visiting the Embassy in Polanco is only necessary for visa categories outside the e-Visa scope.
Why does the Embassy describe itself as a High Commission too?
Because the same post is also the High Commission of India to Belize. India and Belize are both Commonwealth members, and the diplomatic designation between Commonwealth states is High Commission rather than Embassy. The same Polanco office in Mexico City handles both functions: Embassy of India to Mexico for the bilateral with the host country, and High Commission of India to Belize for the Caribbean Commonwealth partner.
I live in Belize — do I apply at the Indian embassy here or in Mexico City?
In Mexico City — there is no Indian embassy in Belize. Belize is concurrently accredited to the Mexico City post (functioning as High Commission for the Belize relationship). An Honorary Consul General of India at 14 Albert Street, Belize City, is the local first contact, while substantive visa, OCI and passport decisions are taken in Polanco; Belizean residents either travel to Mexico City for in-person submissions or coordinate by email with the consular section to send documentation by courier. The Indian e-Visa portal handles online Tourist tier applications regardless of country of residence.
Can I apply for an OCI card at the Mexico City Embassy?
Yes. OCI applications from Persons of Indian Origin resident in Mexico or Belize are processed through the Embassy. Eligibility follows the standard Indian-origin route — a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was an Indian citizen at or after 26 January 1950, with the documentary chain established through birth and passport records. Submit applications in person during the 09:00–17:30 weekday window after pre-clearance by email at cons.mexico@mea.gov.in.
I am an Indian citizen resident in Mexico — what consular services does the Embassy provide?
Indian citizens resident in Mexico or Belize receive passport renewal and re-issue through Passport Seva, lost-passport replacement, certificate attestation for Mexican and Belizean documents required for use in India, Police Clearance Certificates, Same-Person and No-Objection certificates, and International Driving Permit re-issuance. Hospitalisation, arrest, repatriation and bereavement cases go to the emergency number for Indian nationals in distress, +52 55 4847 7539; routine queries use cons.mexico@mea.gov.in and the switchboard during business hours.
Is there an Indian consulate in Monterrey, Guadalajara or any other Mexican city?
There is no career consulate outside Mexico City, but an Honorary Consul of India operates in Monterrey (San Pedro Garza García) as a local contact point for northern Mexico; the honorary posts for Cancún and Guadalajara are currently listed as vacant. All substantive consular submissions — visas, OCI, passports — are processed at the Embassy in Polanco.
