Overview
The Honorary Consulate of Hungary in Bregenz is Hungary's nearest consular point of contact for residents of Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost federal state and the corner of the country closest to Switzerland and the Bodensee. The office operates from Belruptstraße 20 in Bregenz, a few minutes from the lakefront and the Bregenzer Festspiele site, and is led by Honorary Consul Mag. Michael Nemes (in post since June 2021), who runs the long-established Vorarlberg textile firm Nemes. As an honorary consulate the office is limited to document authentication (Beglaubigungsbefugnis) — it has no passport or visa authority. Vorarlberg residents who need passport renewal, identity card processing, civil-status registration or visa applications are routed to the Hungarian Consulate General in Innsbruck (Speckbacherstraße 31-33), which holds the full consular authority for Tirol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg. Hungary's diaspora in Vorarlberg is small but stable, with a long Habsburg-era textile-industry connection between Hungary and the Vorarlberg cotton mills, which is one reason the honorary post sits inside a textile company.
Consular Services
Beglaubigungsbefugnis only — document authentication and signature certification. The office cannot issue Hungarian passports or visas, register births/marriages/deaths, or perform notarial acts requiring full consular authority. For all such matters Vorarlberg residents go to the Consulate General in Innsbruck. The honorary consul also serves as a first-line contact for Hungarian nationals in distress in Vorarlberg, coordinating with the supervising consulate general and with Hungary's 24/7 consular emergency centre in Budapest (+36 80 36 80 36).
Service Area
Vorarlberg. The office's jurisdiction is limited to this single federal state. The Hungarian Consulate General in Innsbruck handles full consular services for Vorarlberg, Tirol and Salzburg.
Appointment Information
Public office hours are Monday to Friday 09:00–12:00. Walk-ins are accepted within those hours; for non-urgent matters a short call or email in advance lets the office prepare any documents. Special Notes
Honorary consulates everywhere are staffed in a non-professional capacity by prominent local figures appointed by the sending state, and the Bregenz office is no exception — Mag. Nemes carries the consular role alongside his day job at the Nemes textile company. Working languages are German and Hungarian; English is workable for simple matters. The office's location in Vorarlberg's small but historically textile-heavy economy reflects the long-standing trade ties between Hungarian and Vorarlberg cotton mills under the Habsburg empire and into the 20th century.
