Overview
The Embassy of Iceland in Vienna is Iceland's embassy in Austria, headed by Ambassador Ms. Helga Hauksdóttir. The embassy is located at Naglergasse 2/3/8 in the first district of Vienna, in the same building complex that houses the two Icelandic honorary consulates (the Honorary Consulate General covering western Austria and the Honorary Consulate covering eastern Austria). Iceland and Austria are fellow EEA and Schengen members with bilateral ties in trade, renewable energy, tourism, Arctic policy, and multilateral diplomacy — Vienna's role as host to the OSCE, IAEA, UNIDO, and OPEC makes it a natural hub for Iceland's multilateral engagement. Austria is both a source market for tourism to Iceland (direct flights from Vienna to Keflavik via Wizz Air, connections through Frankfurt and Munich on Icelandair and Lufthansa) and a transit point for Icelandic travellers heading to Central and South-Eastern Europe.
Consular Services
The embassy provides the full range of consular services for Icelandic citizens in Austria: passport applications and renewals, identity document processing, civil registrations (births, marriages, deaths), notarial services, and emergency consular assistance. Icelandic citizens requiring consular help outside office hours can contact the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs emergency line. The embassy also assists Austrian residents with queries related to travel to Iceland, residency, and bilateral cooperation.
Service Area
The embassy covers the entire Republic of Austria. In practice, the Honorary Consulate General in Salzburg (Mr. Erik Eibl) handles first-line contact for Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, and Vorarlberg, while the Honorary Consulate in Vienna (Mr. Alfred Schubrig) covers Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, and Carinthia. Passport renewals, visa matters for non-EEA nationals, and complex consular cases are handled directly by the embassy.
Appointment Information
The embassy is open Monday to Friday 09:00–16:00. Appointments are recommended for consular services but not strictly required. Contact by phone (+43 1 533 2771) or email (vienna@mfa.is) to arrange a visit.
