Frequently asked questions
Do Colombian passport holders need a visa to enter India?
Yes. Colombian passport holders are not visa-free for India, but they are on the Indian e-Visa list. The standard path is the online e-Visa application through the Indian government portal in one of the popular Tourist tiers (30-day double-entry, 1-year multi-entry or 5-year multi-entry), approved by email within roughly three to five business days. Visiting the Embassy in person is only necessary for visa categories outside the e-Visa scope.
I live in Ecuador — do I apply at the Indian embassy in Quito or in Bogotá?
In Bogotá — there is no Indian embassy in Quito. Ecuador is concurrently accredited to the Indian Embassy in Bogotá, which serves both Colombia and Ecuador from its Santa Bárbara office. An Honorary Consul General of India in Quito provides a first point of contact in Ecuador, while substantive visa, OCI and passport decisions are taken in Bogotá; Ecuadorian residents either travel to Bogotá for in-person submissions or coordinate by email with the Bogotá consular section to send documentation by courier. The e-Visa portal handles online Tourist tier applications regardless of country of residence.
What are the consular submission and collection hours?
The Embassy runs two separate consular windows. Document submission for visa, OCI and passport cases is received Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:00. Document collection — picking up the completed visa, OCI card or passport — happens Monday to Friday from 15:00 to 16:00. The afternoon collection window is narrower than at some other Indian embassies in Latin America; plan around the one-hour slot.
Can I apply for an OCI card at the Bogotá Embassy?
Yes. OCI applications from Persons of Indian Origin resident in Colombia or Ecuador are processed through the Embassy. Eligibility follows the standard Indian-origin route — a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was an Indian citizen at or after 26 January 1950, with the documentary chain established through birth and passport records. Submit applications in person during the 10:00–12:00 morning window after pre-clearance by email at consular.bogota@mea.gov.in.
I am an Indian citizen in Colombia or Ecuador — what is the emergency contact?
The Embassy operates a dedicated emergency line on +57 314 293 3554 reserved for Indian nationals only. This is the first point of contact for lost or stolen passport in the field, hospitalisation, arrest, bereavement, or any case where in-person consular intervention may be needed outside business hours. Routine cases use the consular email channel at consular.bogota@mea.gov.in plus the 10:00–12:00 morning submission window.
Do I need to get a Colombian document apostilled before submitting it to the Embassy?
Yes. Documents issued by countries under the Embassy's consular jurisdiction — Colombia and Ecuador — must be apostilled or legalised by the respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs before submission to the Embassy for further consular attestation. In Colombia that is the Cancillería; in Ecuador the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana. The Embassy will not accept un-legalised host-country documents for India-bound attestation.
