Frequently asked questions
Do Peruvian passport holders need a visa to enter India?
Yes. Peruvian passport holders are not visa-free for India, but they are on the Indian e-Visa list. The standard path is the online e-Visa application through the Indian government portal in one of the popular Tourist tiers (30-day double-entry, 1-year multi-entry or 5-year multi-entry), approved by email within roughly three to five business days. Visiting the Embassy in San Isidro in person is only necessary for visa categories outside the e-Visa scope.
I live in Bolivia — where do I apply for an Indian visa?
The Embassy of India in Lima is concurrently accredited to Bolivia and is the Indian consular home for Bolivian residents. The Honorary Consulate of India in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (+591 3 342 0004) is the local first contact, with substantive decisions taken in Lima. The standard short tourist trip is filed online through the Indian e-Visa portal regardless of country of residence; sticker visas and longer-stay categories go through the Lima Embassy.
What are the consular window hours?
The Embassy is open Monday to Friday 09:00 to 13:00 and 13:30 to 17:30, but the Consular Section receives walk-in submissions only Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 11:45. Plan around the morning slot; the afternoon shift does not include a public consular counter for visa and passport submissions.
Can I apply for an OCI card at the Lima Embassy?
Yes. OCI applications from Persons of Indian Origin resident in Peru or Bolivia are processed through the Embassy. Eligibility follows the standard Indian-origin route — a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was an Indian citizen at or after 26 January 1950, with the documentary chain established through birth and passport records. Submit applications in person during the 09:30–11:45 morning window after pre-clearance by email at cons.lima@mea.gov.in. Bolivian applicants can make first contact through the Santa Cruz Honorary Consulate.
I am an Indian citizen in Peru or Bolivia — what is the emergency contact?
The Embassy operates a dedicated emergency line for Indian nationals on +51 943 510 962 — the first point of contact for lost or stolen passport, hospitalisation, arrest, bereavement or any case where in-person consular intervention may be needed outside the regular window. For Bolivian residents, the Honorary Consulate of India in Santa Cruz on +591 3 342 0004 provides a local first response with onward coordination to Lima. Routine cases use the cons.lima@mea.gov.in email and the morning consular window.
Is there an Indian consulate in Arequipa, Cusco, or elsewhere in Peru?
No. The Embassy in San Isidro is the only Indian diplomatic post in Peru — there is no consulate or honorary consul in Arequipa, Cusco, Trujillo or any other Peruvian city. The entire territory of Peru routes through Lima for in-person consular submissions. Within the concurrent Bolivian jurisdiction the Honorary Consulate in Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the only local Indian node.
