Introduction

Ma'an Governorate is home to Petra, Jordan's single greatest destination — the rose-red Nabataean city carved into sandstone cliffs, reached through the small tourist town of Wadi Musa that has grown up specifically to serve it.

Overview

Nearly every visitor to Ma'an Governorate is here for one reason, and the governorate is built around serving that visit well. Wadi Musa, the town immediately outside Petra's entrance, exists almost entirely for tourism — hotels at every price point, restaurants, and the visitor centre where tickets and guides are arranged — and functions as the standard overnight base for a Petra visit. Petra itself rewards more time than most visitors initially plan for: a single day covers the Treasury and the immediate surroundings, but the site extends over 264 square kilometres, and Petra by Night — a candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury three evenings a week — is worth building a second evening around. Little Petra (Siq al-Barid), a quieter Nabataean satellite site 8 kilometres north, is a straightforward half-day addition for visitors staying two nights or more.

Discover Ma'an

Wadi Musa grew specifically to serve Petra's visitors and has little independent identity beyond that role — hotels ranging from budget guesthouses to five-star properties, restaurants catering mostly to tour groups and independent travellers alike, and the visitor centre where Jordan Pass holders and ticket buyers both enter. Most hotels sit within easy walking or short taxi distance of the entrance to the Nabataean city itself, the reason the town exists at all. The town's practical convenience — everything a Petra visit needs within a small area — is the whole point; few visitors spend time in Wadi Musa itself beyond eating and sleeping.

Ways to Experience This Destination

Petra

The Nabataean rock city, one of the New Seven Wonders.

Petra by Night

A candlelit evening walk through the Siq to the Treasury, three evenings a week — a genuinely different experience from the daytime visit.

Little Petra & the Ridge

Siq al-Barid, a quieter Nabataean satellite site 8 km north with painted cave ceilings — a straightforward half-day addition for a longer stay.

Ma'an Governorate Travel Information

  • Wadi Musa is the standard base — book accommodation there rather than in Ma'an city, which has no tourist infrastructure geared to Petra visitors.
  • The Jordan Pass (which includes Petra entry) must be purchased online before arrival; without it, standard multi-day entrance tickets are available at the Wadi Musa visitor centre.
  • One full day is the strict minimum for Petra; two nights in Wadi Musa allows a second Petra day, Petra by Night, or Little Petra without rushing.
