Overview

Prizren is the old Ottoman town of southern Kosovo, spread along the Bistrica river below a hilltop fortress at the foot of the Šar mountains.

Travel

Prizren's old town packs mosques, churches, a stone bridge and the houses of the bazaar into a few hundred metres along the Bistrica, with a fortress on the hill above. A day covers the old town and the climb, and a second leaves time for the waterfalls and vineyards to the north or a drive into the Šar mountains over the Prevalla pass. The town is about an hour and a half by bus from Pristina, and in August the Dokufest film festival fills it.

Shadërvan and the Bazaar

The old town gathers around Shadërvan, the cobbled square with its old fountain, from which the lanes of the bazaar run off between low houses, workshops and cafés. The grills and pie shops of the bazaar feed the walk between the monuments, and the silversmiths' workshops are here too.

The Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Stone Bridge

The Sinan Pasha Mosque of 1615 rises over the Bistrica with its tall dome and minaret, a few steps from the Stone Bridge, the Ottoman arch that carries the old town across the river. The Gazi Mehmed Pasha Mosque, known as the Bajrakli Mosque, stands nearby, and the riverbank between them is the town's promenade on summer evenings.

Churches of the Old Town

Within the same few hundred metres stand the Church of Our Lady of Ljeviša, a fourteenth-century church of brick and stone that belongs to the World Heritage site of the medieval monuments of Kosovo, and the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, so the mosques and the Orthodox and Catholic churches share the old town's streets.

The League of Prizren Complex

On the riverbank below the old town, the League of Prizren complex is a small museum in a group of rebuilt stone buildings, named after the league that met there in 1878.

The Fortress

A path climbs from the old town to the fortress on the hill, about twenty minutes uphill on foot, and the walk pays twice: at sunset, when the minarets and the foothills of the Šar turn gold below, and during Dokufest, when screenings move onto the walls. The ruins themselves are walls, gateways and terraces open to the sky.

Frequently asked questions

When is Dokufest?

Dokufest, Prizren's international documentary and short film festival, takes over the town for about a week every August, with screenings in cinemas, on the fortress and on the riverbanks. Beds in the old town are booked out well ahead, so a visit at festival time is planned early.

What is Prizren filigree?

Filigree is jewellery and ornament made from fine silver wire, twisted and soldered into lace-like patterns, a craft Prizren's silversmiths have practised for centuries. Their workshops in the old bazaar make and sell brooches, earrings and small boxes, and a piece of filigree is the town's classic souvenir.

How long should I stay in Prizren?

A day covers the old town, the churches and mosques and the climb to the fortress. Two days leave time for a day out to the Mirusha falls and the Rahovec vineyards or into the Šar mountains, and Prizren is the natural base for both.
