Waterfalls and Vineyards Between Prizren and Pristina

West of the road between Pristina and Prizren, the Mirusha river drops through a narrow canyon in a chain of waterfalls and pools, and to the south the hills around Rahovec are covered in vines. The two make a day out from Prizren or a long stop between the two cities, with a swim in summer and a cellar visit in the afternoon.

The Mirusha Waterfalls

The Mirusha has cut a canyon into the limestone west of Malisheva, and the river falls through it in a series of cascades, each dropping into a travertine pool. A path follows the canyon from the lower pools upwards, and in summer local families come to swim in the lower basins.

The Rahovec Vineyards

The hills around Rahovec, reaching east towards Suhareka, are Kosovo's wine country, and their viticulture has been rebuilt into wineries that make crisp Rieslings and full Vranac reds. Family cellars receive visitors for tastings, and the harvest at the end of summer is the liveliest time to come.

Combining the Two

The falls and the vineyards lie close enough to share a day, and neither is far from the motorway between Pristina and Prizren. A car or a driver hired in Prizren is the simple way to do both; buses reach Malisheva and Rahovec, but not the canyon itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim at the Mirusha waterfalls?

Yes, in summer, when local families swim in the lower pools of the canyon. The path along the river leads up to the higher falls, and good shoes help on the wet limestone.
