Introduction
Eschen is a municipality of Liechtenstein's Unterland, made up of Eschen on the Eschnerberg slope and Nendeln on the valley floor below.
Overview
Eschen is a well-connected base for Liechtenstein's north: Nendeln has a stop on the regional railway, buses link both villages with Vaduz, and the waymarked Eschnerberg ridge walk starts on the doorstep. In the village, the restored Pfrundbauten and several galleries put on exhibitions through the year, and the old mill and the remains of a Roman estate in Nendeln are short detours on a walk.
Discover Eschen
The Eschnerberg ridge walk
The Historischer Höhenweg runs along the whole Eschnerberg, the low ridge that rises out of the Rhine plain in the Unterland. It is well waymarked, with information boards — each with a QR code and a map — on archaeological sites, field names, local legends and nature along the way. The ridge links Eschen with Gamprin, Schellenberg and Mauren, so you can walk any section and take the bus back. Nendeln is also a stage town on the national Liechtenstein Trail, where the third stage from Vaduz ends and the fourth, to Ruggell, begins.
Exhibitions and village sights
The restored Pfrundbauten in Eschen host exhibitions, the galleries in Eschen and Nendeln add more, and St. Martin's is the village church. A short walk takes in the Mühle, a building from 1778 that began as a wine press, and in Nendeln the excavated foundations of a Roman estate lie above the primary school.
