Introduction

Planken is Liechtenstein's smallest municipality by population, a village on a sunny terrace above Schaan at the foot of the Three Sisters massif.

Overview

Planken is a walkers' village. From the terrace above Schaan a gravel road winds up in about an hour and a half to Gafadura, where the Liechtenstein Alpine Club runs a mountain hut with a terrace, meals and beds — an easy family outing from spring to autumn. Above it rises the Three Sisters, one of the most popular mountain tours in the country, and shorter walks around the village lead to Oberplanken, Bärenboden and Rütti.

Discover Planken

Up to Gafadura

The classic walk from Planken follows the switchback gravel road up to the Alp Gafadura in about an hour and a half — gentle enough for children. Faster walkers take the steeper paths through the forest. At around 1,428 metres, the Liechtenstein Alpine Club's hut has a terrace with a wide view, food and drinks, and rooms for an overnight stay, which turns the walk into a two-day trip for anyone continuing higher.

The Three Sisters

Above Gafadura rise the Three Sisters (Drei Schwestern), one of the best-loved mountain tours in Liechtenstein. Gafadura is the natural stop on the way up or down, and the ridge needs proper mountain experience, footwear and good weather. For something gentler, the marked walks around Planken to Oberplanken, Bärenboden and Rütti stay on the terrace with views over the Rhine Valley towards Schaan.
