Introduction

Schaan is Liechtenstein's principal town, on the Rhine plain just north of Vaduz, with its forested slopes rising towards the Three Sisters massif.

Overview

Schaan is where many visitors first set foot in Liechtenstein: the regional train from Feldkirch to Buchs stops at Schaan-Vaduz and Forst Hilti, and buses from here reach every village. Above the town, the Dux area has a lookout tower facing the Rhine Valley and the wild slopes below the Three Sisters, and a forest path leads to the ruin of Schalun castle on its rocky ridge towards Vaduz. Banks, shops and ATMs make it a practical first stop.

Discover Schaan

Dux: tower and chapel above the town

The Dux area on the slope above Schaan combines two short goals. The Tower at Dux is a lookout with a view over the Rhine Valley in one direction and the rugged landscape below the Three Sisters massif in the other, and the Dux Chapel (Maria zum Trost) stands nearby. Together they make a short outing on foot from the town, and a first taste of the hiking country around Planken.

Schalun castle ruin

The ruin of Schalun castle, also called Wildschloss, sits on an exposed rocky ridge between Schaan and Vaduz. It is reached on foot from either town and looks out over the Rhine Valley from its ridge.

Arriving by train

Liechtenstein's few railway stops are on the regional line between Feldkirch in Austria and Buchs SG in Switzerland, and two of them are in Schaan: Schaan-Vaduz and Forst Hilti. From Schaan-Vaduz, LIEmobil buses continue to Vaduz and the rest of the country. Most long-distance travellers still arrive at Sargans, Buchs SG or Feldkirch and take the bus in.
