Frequently asked questions
Do Austrian citizens need a visa to visit Portugal?
No. Austria is in the EU and the Schengen Area, so Austrian citizens travel to Portugal with an identity card or passport and stay without a visa. The same applies to EU and EEA nationals resident in Austria, and to citizens of Slovenia, which the embassy also covers.
I live in Austria but am not an EU national — do I need a visa for Portugal?
Possibly. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you apply for a short-stay (type C) visa for trips of up to 90 days, or a national (type D) visa for longer stays, work, study or family reunification — at the consular section in Vienna, by appointment.
How do Portuguese citizens in Austria renew a passport or Cartão de Cidadão?
By appointment at the consular section in Vienna, on +43 1 585 37 20 (sconsular.viena@mne.pt). The honorary consulates in Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz and Graz help with first-line questions, but the passport and Cartão de Cidadão are issued through the Vienna section. Bring the documents listed for the service you need.
Can Portuguese citizens in Austria vote in Portuguese elections?
Yes. Registered voters take part in Portuguese elections from abroad, and the consular section handles electoral registration. Check that your registration is current well before an election, as deadlines apply.
Where can I study Portuguese in Austria?
Through the Camões I.P. presence at Austrian universities: Portuguese Language Centres at the University of Vienna (since 2006) and in Graz, a Portuguese lectureship in Vienna, and teaching protocols with the Universities of Graz and Salzburg. The footprint is academic rather than a school network.
Does the Vienna embassy also cover Slovenia?
Yes. Since 2013 the embassy in Vienna has been accredited to Slovenia as well as Austria, so Portuguese nationals in Slovenia and Slovenia-based applicants for Portuguese visas are served from Vienna.
