New Zealand
New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa, “Land of the Long White Cloud”) packs an astonishing range of landscapes into two islands at the bottom of the Pacific, smaller than the UK, with 5.1 million people and around 25 million sheep. Wellington, the world's southernmost capital, sits on the North Island; Auckland is the largest city and main international gateway. Māori culture — around 17% of the population — is woven into daily life, with te reo Māori an official language alongside English. Since October 2019, visa-waiver nationals must obtain the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before boarding, alongside the separate IVL conservation levy.

Visa Requirements for New Zealand
New Zealand waives visas for visitors from more than sixty countries — the United States, the United Kingdom, the EU, Canada, Australia and Japan among them — but visa-waiver travellers arriving by air must hold an NZeTA, the electronic travel authority, before departure, paid together with the international visitor levy; it is valid two years for visits of up to 90 days each. Australian citizens and permanent residents enter without it, and nationalities outside the waiver — South Africa, India and China among them — apply for a visitor visa through a New Zealand mission.
Before you travel
NZeTA and the levy
Applied for in the official app or on the immigration website; approval is usually instant and can take up to 72 hours. Both amounts are set by the government and revised, so check the current figures.
Passport validity
At least three months beyond the intended stay.
Biosecurity
Declare all food, plants and outdoor equipment on arrival; undeclared items bring heavy on-the-spot fines.
Language requirement
Visitor and working-holiday entry needs no English test. The Skilled Migrant Category asks the principal applicant for IELTS 6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, and universities ask for IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Cambridge scores for admission.

Guides
New Zealand compresses an extraordinary range of landscapes into two islands — geothermal fields and Māori culture in the north, dramatic fiords and glaciers in the south, and adventure sports, world-class hiking and Lord of the Rings filming locations throughout. Great Walks, wine regions and a strong café culture round out a trip that rewards taking the time to properly cover both islands.

Frequently asked questions
Do I still need the NZeTA if my country has visa-free access?
Yes — the NZeTA is a separate electronic travel authorisation, not a visa, and visa-waiver nationals must obtain it online before boarding their flight; airlines can and do deny boarding to travellers who skip this step.
What's the difference between a Great Walk and regular hiking?
Great Walks are a specific set of DOC-managed tracks with staffed huts, bunks and water along the route, bookable in advance — regular freedom hiking on New Zealand's wider trail network offers similar scenery with far less infrastructure and requires more self-sufficiency.
Is Hobbiton worth visiting if I'm not a big Lord of the Rings fan?
It works as a standalone attraction — the rebuilt, permanent set sits in genuinely scenic rolling farmland, and the tour explains the filmmaking craft behind it in enough detail to interest visitors who've never seen the films.
What should I know before visiting a marae?
Expect a structured pōwhiri welcome ceremony with speeches, song and a hongi greeting — organised tours guide visitors through the protocol step by step, so no prior knowledge is required, but it is a formal experience rather than an informal walk-in.
Which island should I prioritise with only one week?
The South Island packs in more of the dramatic scenery most first-time visitors picture — Milford Sound, Queenstown, the glaciers — while the North Island suits those prioritising Māori cultural experiences, Hobbiton and Auckland's city life; a week is realistically enough for one island done properly rather than both rushed.
When is the best time to find working holiday harvest jobs?
Fruit-picking work in Hawke's Bay and Marlborough runs roughly November through April, so arriving in spring gives the longest run of seasonal work before winter shifts opportunities toward ski-town hospitality instead.
What can't I bring into New Zealand?
Declare all food, plants, animal products and outdoor gear (hiking boots, tents, fishing equipment) on arrival — New Zealand runs some of the world's strictest biosecurity controls to protect a unique ecosystem from invasive species, and undeclared items can mean an instant fine or prosecution. Clean, dry hiking boots before you pack them, and when in doubt, declare it rather than risk it.
