Frequently asked questions
Do Chilean passport holders need a visa to enter India?
Yes. Chilean passport holders are not visa-free for India, but they are on the Indian e-Visa list. The standard path is the online e-Visa application through the Indian government portal in one of the popular Tourist tiers (30-day double-entry, 1-year multi-entry or 5-year multi-entry), approved by email within roughly three to five business days. Visiting the Embassy in person is only necessary for visa categories outside the e-Visa scope.
What are the consular submission and collection hours?
The Embassy runs two separate consular windows. Document submission for visa, OCI and passport cases is received Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:30. Document collection — picking up the completed visa, OCI card or passport — happens Monday to Friday from 14:30 to 16:30. Outside these windows the administrative office is open but the consular counter is not staffed for public service; queries go to cons.santiago@mea.gov.in.
Does the Embassy cover Ecuador, Bolivia or Peru?
No. The Embassy of India in Santiago covers Chile only. Ecuador is accredited to the Indian Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia, which also lists an Honorary Consul General in Quito. Peru is served by the Indian Embassy in Lima, which is concurrently accredited to Bolivia and works with an Honorary Consul in Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
Can I apply for an OCI card at the Santiago Embassy?
Yes. OCI applications from Persons of Indian Origin resident in Chile are processed through the Embassy. Eligibility follows the standard Indian-origin route — a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was an Indian citizen at or after 26 January 1950, with the documentary chain established through birth and passport records. Submit applications in person during the 10:00–12:30 morning window after pre-clearance by email at cons.santiago@mea.gov.in.
I am an Indian citizen resident in Chile — what is the emergency contact?
The Embassy operates a 24-hour NRI distress line on +56 9 3215 4035 for emergencies involving Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin in Chile — lost or stolen passport, hospitalisation, arrest, bereavement, or any case where in-person consular intervention may be needed outside business hours. The standard consular channel for non-emergency cases remains email at cons.santiago@mea.gov.in plus the 10:00–12:30 morning submission window.
Is there an Indian consulate elsewhere in Chile?
No. The Embassy in Santiago is the single Indian diplomatic post in Chile. There is no consulate in Valparaíso, Concepción, Antofagasta, La Serena or any other regional city. Applicants and Indian residents in regional Chile must travel to the Las Condes embassy in Santiago for in-person consular submissions and collections.
