The Embassy of South Africa in Rome is South Africa's diplomatic mission to Italy, processing visa applications for Italian residents and providing consular services to South African nationals in Italy.
Visa Services
South Africa runs a visa-free system for most Western nationalities: Italian, EU, British, US, Australian, Canadian, and Japanese citizens can enter visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days. The immigration officer stamps the authorised period in the passport — always check the stamped date, as overstaying has serious consequences. The passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the planned departure with 2 consecutive blank pages (not annotation pages). A yellow fever certificate is mandatory from endemic countries (including transits over 12 hours in Nairobi or Addis Ababa) — vaccination at least 10 days before arrival. Minors under 18 need special documentation: a full birth certificate, parental consent if travelling with only one parent.
Consular Services
The embassy provides passport and travel document services, civil registration, document attestation and legalization, and emergency consular assistance for South African nationals in Italy.
