Frequently asked questions
Do Italians need a visa for Canada?
Not a visa — an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), obtained online in minutes and valid for air travel for up to five years or until the passport expires. Work, study, and immigration run through IRCC's online application systems instead.
Which countries does the Canadian embassy in Rome cover?
Italy plus Albania and San Marino by accreditation — the ambassador's formal title names all three — with Malta in the mission's coverage as well. None of the other three hosts a separate Canadian post; their residents book Rome's Via Zara appointments.
How does a Canadian in Italy renew a passport?
By appointment at the Via Zara 30 consular building, at the passport counter's morning window, 09:00-12:00 — write to romepasscit@international.gc.ca. General consular matters keep the longer 09:00-16:00 appointment window under consul.rome@international.gc.ca.
How do Canadians get emergency help in Italy outside office hours?
Through Canada's Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa, which answers 24/7 for Canadians abroad and backs every mission including Rome. During office hours, the Via Zara switchboard +39 06 85444 1 is the door.
